Arsenal hold genuine interest in signing Christian Kofane

Arsenal reportedly hold a genuine interest in signing Bayer Leverkusen forward Christian Kofane, as per the player’s agent Eric Depolo.

After moving to BayArena from Spanish side Albacete Balompié last summer, the 20-year-old featured as a rotational option. Still, he showed glimpses of his qualities, scoring seven goals and registering six assists in 20 starts across all competitions last term.

Having proven his worth in club football, the youngster has already made his international debut for Cameroon.

Now, on the Daily Arsenal website (via the Independent), Depolo said that Arsenal hold a genuine interest in signing Kofane after being impressed by his recent eye-catching performances.

Mikel Arteta likes Kofane very much, and Arsenal are currently the frontrunners to secure his services after holding talks with the player’s representatives.

Kofane is a 6ft 2in tall right-footed striker. He is quick, strong, good in the air, and efficient in holding up the play. Moreover, he is efficient in finishing off his chances and works hard without possession.

Arsenal currently have Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres as striker options. However, the Brazilian has struggled with fitness problems over the last few years and has entered the final 12 months of his current contract.

Kofane to Arsenal

So, speculation surrounding his future has been emerging in this window. On the other hand, Havertz has displayed inconsistent performances since joining from Chelsea and has had injury issues in recent months, starting only nine matches across the Premier League and Champions League last term.

Gyokeres, meanwhile, was Arsenal’s highest scorer last season with 21 goals across all competitions, but he showed inconsistency at times. As a result, it appears Arteta wants a new striker this summer, and the Gunners have been linked with a few names.

Kofane is a talented player and possesses high potential. However, he is still very young, and there is a question mark over whether he is ready enough to help Arsenal achieve their lofty ambitions immediately if he were to join this summer.

Therefore, Arsenal could do with signing a more experienced striker. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to reinforce the frontline by purchasing the Cameroonian.
