Arsenal transfer news: Attacker agrees terms ahead of £17.8m move
Some interesting reports coming out of Spain, via the Express, that claim Arsenal attacker Mesut Ozil has agreed personal terms with Barcelona ahead of a potential £17.8m January move.
As we all know, Ozil is in the final year of his contract at the Emirates and we’ve so far been unable to tie him down to an extension despite lengthy talks with his agents.
The 29-year-old will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January but has been linked with a free transfer move to Manchester United next summer as Jose Mourinho seemingly wants him at Old Trafford.
Reports in the press suggest that Arsenal don’t want to lose both Ozil and Alexis Sanchez for nothing next summer so one of the attackers will be allowed to leave this winter.
Many assume it will be Alexis who’ll leave with Man City hot on his trail but growing reports in recent weeks have been linking Barcelona with a move for Ozil and it seems they’ve stepped-up their pursuit.
The Express are citing a report from Spanish outlet Catalunya Radio that claims Barca have been in negotiations with Ozil’s camp and have now agreed terms over a three-and-a-half year deal.
The Catalans are understood to be keen to sign Mesut in January as he’ll be eligible to play in the Champions League during the second half of the season and the report says a £17.8m deal with Arsenal is on the cards.
I think it’s becoming increasingly clear that Ozil [and Sanchez] won’t be signing a new deal so it makes sense that we should look to cash-in during the winter as there is no point letting him go for nothing a few months later.
I said in the summer we should have sold if he didn’t sign a new deal and despite his impressive display against Tottenham, Ozil has been largely disappointing this season when he has been fit enough to play.
I hate the idea of him joining United so if we can get close to £18m off Barcelona in January then I say DO IT, as long as we have a replacement lined-up.
