Arsenal eye audacious late swoop for £72m Spanish star
According to a report in the Mirror, Arsenal are eyeing a sensational late swoop to try and sign Real Madrid attacker Marco Asensio in a £72m deal before the window closes.
Arsene Wenger has confirmed he’s ‘on alert’ to making new signings before the window slams shut on Thursday night now that he’s started to offload our deadwood.
Another attacker has been on the bosses agenda all summer but we’ve been forced to look at alternatives for No.1 target Thomas Lemar as Wenger says a deal for the Monaco star is now ‘dead’.
It looks like we may have an ambitious target in mind as the Mirror are citing a report from Diario Gol that claims Arsenal could be set to launch a stunning late move to sign Asensio.
The Spanish outlet suggests that the 21-year-old could encourage Arsenal to formalise their interest by triggering his £72m buy out clause if Madrid don’t give him guarantees over regular action this season.
Asensio has developed in to one of the most exciting young attackers in Europe since joining Madrid from Mallorca three year ago but he’s struggled to hold down a regular place in Zinedine Zidane’s starting eleven.
The youngster made just 11 La Liga starts last season and with the likes of Gareth Bale and Isco still ahead of him in the pecking order, his chances of starting on a regular basis don’t look much better this year.
It would obviously be a sensational coup if we could somehow land Asensio but I personally don’t think there is any chance of a deal happening, despite these reports today.
The Spaniard is probably just using our interest as leverage to try and secure more first team football at Madrid or even to get a better contract at the Bernabeu.
