Arsenal join chase for 23-goal attacker who wants London move
The Mirror are reporting today that Arsenal have joined Chelsea in the race for Borussia Dortmund attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan with the player believed to be keen on a move to London.
Mkhitaryan came close to moving to Liverpool when he left Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013 but eventually opted to join Dortmund in a £25m deal as they were able to offer Champions League football.
The Armenian international has continued to impress in the Bundesliga with the 27-year-old scoring 23 goals and providing 30 assists in all competitions this season alone – which are numbers even Mesut Ozil would be proud of.
Mkhitaryan has just one year left on his current contract and has so far failed to agree terms over an extension which has led to strong interest from Chelsea in recent months, according to the Mirror.
However, it appears Arsenal have now joined the chase as the newspaper says Arsene Wenger has identified the attacking midfielder as a potential signing this summer as the boss looks to strengthen his squad after a disappointing campaign.
The Mirror claim that Mkhitaryan has made it clear he’s keen on moving to London, so it’s a straight fight between us and Chelsea, however we should have the edge as we’re likely to be able to offer Champions League football.
Mkhitaryan is capable of playing anywhere across the front three positions but he’s predominantly started on the right side for Dortmund, so he could be viewed as a potential replacement for Theo Walcott – who’s being tipped to leave this summer after a hugely disappointing campaign.
Some fans say they wouldn’t care if we missed out on the top four as long as it meant something would change at the club, but the problem is we’d risk losing out on top players such as Mkhitaryan if we aren’t able to offer Champions League football.
I’d love to see the player come to Arsenal as he’s a top class attacker who’s capable of contributing impressive numbers in the final third, and he’s surely be an upgrade on the likes of Walcott.
