Arsenal plotting audacious swoop to sign Vinicius Junior

Arsenal are plotting an audacious swoop to sign Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid this summer, according to David Ornstein.

Since the English league was rebranded as the Premier League in 1992, consecutive league wins have been difficult.

Manchester United were the first team to win the league twice in a row, and they even won it thrice in a row on two occasions in what was a dominant 20-year period between 1992 and 2013, where they won the competition 13 times.

Chelsea are the other team to win the league consecutively, doing so in 2004-05 and 2005-06.

The scope of league retention completely changed after Pep Guardiola joined City, firstly winning two in a row and then four in a row in a successful ten-year spell at the Etihad.

Now, one prominent theme among these teams’ successful league title defence was their ability to make their squad even better the following season.

As such, following Arsenal’s 2025-26 Premier League victory, the club appear determined to retain their league crown, and it’s no surprise they are looking to make their squad even better than it was last season.

One of the ambitious options Arsenal are looking at is Madrid’s Vinicius, according to David Ornstein, who claims that the Premier League champions are exploring a possible deal to sign the Brazilian this summer.

Ambitious swoop

However, the transfer expert clarifies that the Gunners’ interest is only preliminary at this stage, and talks are not advanced at the time of writing.

Amid swirling reports about the 26-year-old’s contractual situation, Ornstein adds that a deal to sign Vinicius largely depends on Madrid’s contract situation, as the Spanish giants do not want to sell him for free.

Described as ‘one of the best in the world’ by Carlo Ancelotti, Vinicius would unarguably be Arsenal’s best and most ambitious signing in decades. The Brazilian international would be an instant upgrade on Mikel Arteta’s current left-wing options.

Last season, his 16 league goals outnumbered the total number of Premier League goals scored by Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Noni Madueke combined (10).

In all competitions, he netted 22 goals and provided 14 assists. He was also Brazil’s talisman at the recently concluded FIFA World Cup, where he netted four goals.

However, aside from the fact that Arsenal will have to pay Madrid a fee around his £114m Transfermarkt valuation, the Gunners will also need to increase their wage budget, as Vinicius will likely be among the highest earners in the league should a deal be formalised.
