Arsenal make enquiries over deal to sign Yan Diomande

Arsenal have made enquiries over the possibility of signing RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande this summer, according to Ben Jacobs.

Diomande’s start to life in Germany has been impressive, making an immediate impact after completing his move from Spanish second-tier side CD Leganés last July.

Across the recently concluded campaign, he produced 13 goals and 10 assists in all competitions. He also finished as the Bundesliga’s leading dribbler with 115 successful take-ons, underlining his exceptional attacking ability and prompting Leipzig director Marcel Schäfer to describe him as ‘outstanding’.

The former DME Academy prospect was also selected in Emerse Faé’s 26-man Ivory Coast squad for the FIFA World Cup, where he made four appearances, created 11 chances, completed 111 passes and recorded 10 successful dribbles.

After excelling in both the Bundesliga and at the World Cup, the youngster is expected to become one of the most coveted emerging talents in the ongoing summer transfer market.

Now, according to talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs, Arsenal have made enquiries over the possibility of signing Diomande this summer.

Audacious swoop

Despite the enquiries, the deal is not advanced yet amid reports of Leipzig’s tough stance and potential sky-high valuation, with the transfer expert clarifying that the Gunners’ interest at this stage is only exploratory.

However, should Arsenal decide to step up their interest, they’re set to face competition from Paris Saint-Germain, as Jacobs adds that the French champions are working on a deal to sign Diomande, who favours a move to the Parc des Princes, while Leipzig are also hoping the winger extends his contract to remain for at least another season.

From a statistical perspective, the recently concluded Bundesliga campaign further highlighted Diomande’s quality. He ranked in the 90th percentile for completed dribbles, the 96th percentile for non-penalty goals and the 79th percentile for key passes among players in his position.

Perhaps even more impressively, despite primarily operating as a winger, the Ivorian finished with 437 duels won—the highest total of any player in the Bundesliga.

Although questions may remain over how quickly he would adjust to the Premier League, the youngster has already shown he can excel against top-level opposition, producing a standout display against Arsenal’s Piero Hincapié as Ivory Coast defeated Ecuador 1-0 at the World Cup.

With four years left on his contract at the Red Bull Arena, a deal won’t be easy, and Arsenal will need to submit a significant offer well above his £76m Leipzig Transfermarkt valuation to test Leipzig’s resolve.
