Arsenal explored the possibility of signing Phil Foden

Arsenal reportedly explored the possibility of signing Manchester City star Phil Foden, as per TEAMtalk.

After coming through the Citizens’ youth system, the 26-year-old made his first team debut back in 2017. He has enjoyed great success under Pep Guardiola over the years, winning six Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy and numerous other major cup competitions.

The Englishman showcased his best during the 2023/24 campaign, scoring 27 goals and registering 12 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions.

However, he displayed average performances over the last couple of years. Still, the versatile forward made 17 goal contributions in all competitions last season.

Having performed inconsistently last term, Foden failed to secure his place in England’s World Cup squad.

Now, TEAMtalk claim that Arsenal explored the possibility of signing Foden this summer as he entered the final year of his current contract. Apart from the North London club, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich were also interested in him.

The Bavarian club were monitoring his situation closely as Vincent Kompany was keen on reuniting with Foden in Germany. However, the Englishman has decided to stay at the Etihad Stadium by signing a fresh term until 2030.

Foden is a left-footed creative midfielder by trait but is also comfortable on either flank. He is quick, technically sound, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas and is efficient in creating opportunities for fellow attackers. Moreover, he has an eye for scoring goals from distance and also works hard without possession.

Foden to Arsenal

Arsenal currently have Eberechi Eze and Martin Odegaard as options to deploy in the No.10 position. Moreover, Ethan Nwaneri can provide cover in this position if needed.

However, Odegaard struggled with fitness problems last term, while Nwaneri is still very young and struggled to break into Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up last term.

Foden is a top-class player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. So, he would have been a great coup for Arsenal had they managed to purchase him.

It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually buy a new No.10 this summer after failing to sign the Man City star, valued at around £60m by Transfermarkt.
