Arsenal remain keen on signing Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes

Arsenal reportedly remain keen on signing Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes, as per The Athletic.

Since moving to St James’ Park from Olympique Lyonnais, the 28-year-old has established himself as a talismanic figure, helping his side win the Carabao Cup last year.

Although Guimaraes was out for a few months due to injury problems last campaign, he showcased his productivity, scoring nine goals and registering seven assists in 41 appearances across all competitions.

Having proven his worth in club football, the midfielder has secured his place in Brazil’s national team’s starting line-up, helping his country reach the World Cup last-16 before losing to Norway.

Now, The Athletic report that Arsenal are interested in reinforcing the engine room by purchasing Guimaraes this summer.

However, they have a clear valuation for the player and will only finalise the operation if Newcastle negotiate within those parameters. If the Magpies refuse, Arsenal will shift focus to alternative options.

The South American is valued at around £60m by Transfermarkt and still has a contract until 2028. Therefore, Newcastle aren’t in any rush to sell him this summer.

Guimaraes to Arsenal

Guimaraes is a versatile right-footed player. He likes to be deployed in the box-to-box role but is also efficient in the deep-lying playmaker position.

He is quick, strong, good in the air, and can play threading passes between the lines. Moreover, the Brazilian is efficient at taking set-pieces, can create opportunities for the attackers, and works hard without possession.

Guimaraes is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. Therefore, the Newcastle star would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him.

Mikel Arteta currently has Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Christian Norgaard as options to deploy in the deeper midfield positions.

However, Norgaard struggled to break into Arteta’s starting line-up last term, while Zubimendi displayed inconsistent performances. Rice, meanwhile, has taken on an enormous workload over the last 12 months. So, Arsenal could do with signing a new midfielder.

It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to lure Guimaraes to the Emirates Stadium during this offseason.
