Arsenal plot surprise swoop to sign John Stones

Arsenal are reportedly planning to launch a surprise swoop to sign John Stones, as per The Sun.

After joining Manchester City from Everton back in 2016, the 32-year-old enjoyed great success, winning six Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, and several other major cup competitions.

However, he has had numerous fitness problems over the last few years. As a result, the Citizens have decided not to hand him a fresh term, and he is currently available as a free agent.

Now, The Sun report that following William Saliba’s recent injury, Arsenal are considering signing a cheap short-term option to provide cover for the Frenchman and have identified Stones as a serious option.

Mikel Arteta knows the player very well, having previously worked together at the Etihad Stadium during his time as Pep Guardiola’s assistant. So, the player could be open to reuniting with the Spaniard at Arsenal.

Having struggled to find regular game time at Man City in recent years, Stones might be prioritising playing regularly for his next club at this stage of his career.

Stones, standing at 6ft 2in tall, is a right-footed centre-back by trait but previously featured as a defensive midfielder under Guardiola. He is technically sound, comfortable playing out from the back, good in the air, and efficient in defensive contributions.

Stones to Arsenal

Despite struggling to find regular game time for the Citizens last term, Stones secured his place in England’s World Cup squad. He helped his side finish third in this competition.

Stones is a top-class player and could be a shrewd short-term acquisition for Arsenal to replace Saliba should they purchase him.

Amid Saliba’s absence, Arteta currently has Cristhian Mosquera as the only specialist option to deploy in the RCB position.

Jurrien Timber and Ben White can provide cover in this position, but Arteta uses the duo as right-backs and White has had numerous fitness problems in recent years. So, Arsenal could do with signing a new RCB this summer.

However, Stones’ recent fitness record is a real concern, and it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in this window.
