Newcastle United star Bruno Guimarães is reportedly keen on joining Arsenal this summer, as per transfer expert David Ornstein.

Since moving to St James’ Park from Olympique Lyonnais, the 28-year-old has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, helping his side win the Carabao Cup last year.

Although he struggled with fitness problems last campaign, he showcased his productivity, scoring nine goals and registering seven assists across all competitions.

Having proven his worth in club football, the midfielder has secured his place in the Brazilian national team’s starting line-up.

Now, on The Athletic, Ornstein reports that after helping Newcastle progress over the last few years, the South American is open to leaving to take the next step in his career.

He is keen on joining Arsenal and has already informed Newcastle about his desire. The Gunners are stepping up their interest and are prepared to spend around £60m to purchase him, with his existing deal set to run until 2028.

It was reported earlier that Arsenal made a £55m bid to sign him, but the Magpies rejected the offer as they didn’t want to part ways with him. However, they might now have to change their stance.

Guimarães to Arsenal

Guimarães is a box-to-box midfielder by trait but is also efficient in the defensive midfield position. He is quick, strong, good in the air, technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, and is efficient in defensive contributions.

The former Lyon star is a Premier League proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. So, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him.

Arsenal currently have Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Christian Norgaard as options to deploy in the deeper midfield positions.

However, the Dane struggled to find regular game time last term, while Zubimendi displayed inconsistent performances. Moreover, Merino had fitness problems. Lewis-Skelly, meanwhile, is still very young and needs time to develop. So, Arteta’s side could do with purchasing a new midfielder.

Nevertheless, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to lure him to the Emirates club before the start of next season.
