Arsenal have reportedly been ‘in contact’ to sign Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Gunners currently have Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi, and Christian Norgaard as options to deploy in the deeper midfield positions. Moreover, Myles Lewis-Skelly is efficient in providing cover in this position if needed.

After moving to the Emirates Stadium from Real Sociedad last summer, Zubimendi enjoyed a promising start in the Premier League. However, he failed to continue the momentum and eventually struggled to break into Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up during the final few matches of this season.

With Norgaard failing to impress since joining from Brentford and Merino out injured, Arteta decided to deploy Lewis-Skelly in the engine room alongside Rice in the Champions League final vs PSG.

So, it appears Arsenal have started exploring options to strengthen the midfield department this summer. Now, on his YouTube channel, Romano states that the North London club appreciate Tonali very much and have already been ‘in contact’ with the player’s representatives to persuade him to join.

However, Arsenal will have to overcome fierce competition to seal the deal as Manchester City are also interested in the former AC Milan star. They are prioritising reinforcing the midfield department by signing Elliot Anderson, but Nottingham Forest want an enormous fee to sell him.

So, Man City have lined up Tonali as an alternative option in-case they fail to secure Anderson’s service.

Tonali to Arsenal

With the player’s existing deal set to run until 2029, Newcastle are in a strong position to demand a huge fee if they are forced to cash-in. They usually play hardball to sell their big assets, with the player valued at around £69m by Transfermarkt.

Tonali is comfortable in the deep-lying playmaker position and the box-to-box role. He is quick, strong, has an eye for long-range passing, and is also efficient in playing threading passes between the lines.

The 26-year-old is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they eventually manage to secure his services.
