Arsenal ‘remain interested’ in signing Mateus Fernandes

Arsenal reportedly ‘remain interested’ in signing West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, as per Caught Offside.

After finishing second in the last three consecutive Premier League campaigns, the Gunners have finally managed to win the title under Mikel Arteta’s guidance this season.

The North Londoners had an opportunity to end the season on an even higher note by winning the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.

Kai Havertz earned Arsenal an early lead against Paris Saint-Germain in the final. However, PSG fought back to level the score, and after the match finished 1-1 following extra time, Arsenal were ultimately beaten on penalties.

Meanwhile, it has been suggested that Arteta’s side have already started exploring options to refresh the squad this summer and maintain their momentum next season.

Now, Caught Offside claim that, following Christian Norgaard’s struggles to break into Arteta’s starting line-up this campaign, Arsenal are keen on purchasing a new midfielder to replace the Dane.

The North London club ‘remain interested’ in Fernandes and could make a concrete approach to secure his services during this offseason.

Fernandes to Arsenal

However, the report state that Arsenal will have to overcome fierce competition to seal the deal as Chelsea, Aston Villa, Les Parisiens, Atlético Madrid, Inter Milan, Juventus, and Napoli are also in this race.

Moreover, Manchester United have been showing a keen interest in him and are currently the strongest candidate to finalise the operation.

After moving to the London Stadium from Southampton last summer, the 21-year-old still has a contract until 2030. However, following their relegation, West Ham might be forced to cash-in on him in this window to balance the books.

The East London club initially wanted up to £52m to let him leave, but they might now have to sell him for an even lower fee.

Fernandes is a versatile player as he is comfortable playing anywhere across the middle of the park. He is quick, strong, technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, has an eye for long-range passing, and also works hard without possession.

The West Ham star is a highly talented player and could be a great coup for Arsenal should they eventually manage to secure his services by defeating other clubs in this race.
