Arsenal are reportedly ‘keen’ on signing West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, as per the Daily Mail.

After finishing as runners-up in each of the last three consecutive Premier League campaigns, the Gunners have finally managed to become English champions following Manchester City’s draw against AFC Bournemouth.

However, Mikel Arteta’s side still have an opportunity to end the season on an even higher note if they manage to beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final later this month.

Amid this situation, Arsenal have started exploring options to add further depth to the squad this summer to continue challenging on all fronts next campaign.

The Daily Mail report that the Gunners are considering signing a new midfielder and are ‘keen’ on Fernandes after being impressed by his performances this season.

Although the Hammers have displayed woeful performances this season, Fernandes has shown glimpses of his qualities, making nine goal contributions across all competitions.

If Tottenham Hotspur avoid defeat against Everton in the final Premier League game, West Ham United will be relegated. If that happens, they would need to raise around £100m to compensate for the drop in revenue, with Fernandes being their biggest asset.

Fernandes to Arsenal

However, the report state that Arsenal will have to overcome fierce competition to seal the deal as Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are also in this race. The Red Devils have already held talks with West Ham over this deal.

The Portuguese joined the East London club from Southampton last summer and still has a contract until 2030. He is valued at around £30m by Transfermarkt, so they are likely to demand a big fee to sell him.

Fernandes is a box-to-box midfielder by trait but is also comfortable in the deep-lying playmaker and creative midfield positions. He is quick, strong, technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, has an eye for long-range passing, and is also efficient in defensive contributions.

The 21-year-old is a top-class player and possesses the necessary attributes to flourish in Mikel Arteta’s system. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they eventually manage to secure his service this summer.
