Arsenal reportedly remain keen on signing Stade Rennais star Jeremy Jacquet, as per Caught Offside.
The Gunners wanted to add depth at centre-back last summer and had reportedly identified the 20-year-old as a potential option. However, they eventually opted to sign Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié instead.
As a result, Mikel Arteta’s side currently have a well-resourced defence with William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes the primary centre-back options, and Mosquera and Hincapié the backups.
Moreover, Ben White, Jurrien Timber, and Riccardo Calafiori can also provide cover in the CB position if needed. Therefore, the Gunners don’t need a new defender next year unless anyone leaves.
However, Caught Offside claim that although Arsenal decided not to formalise their interest in signing Jacquet last summer, they remain keen on him and could make a concrete approach next year.
But, the North London club will have to overcome stiff competition to seal the deal as Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Crystal Palace are in this race as well.
Amid growing interest in Jacquet, Rennes have resigned to losing their key player and are ready to let him leave for a fee of at least £26m, with his existing deal set to run until 2029.
Jacquet to Arsenal
The Frenchman is 6ft 2in tall and is comfortable playing out from the back. Moreover, the right-footed defender is quick, good in the air, strong and excellent in defensive contributions.
He possesses the necessary attributes to flourish in Arteta’s possession-based system. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium next year.
Meanwhile, following a thumping 4-1 victory over Tottenham last weekend, Arsenal defeated Bayern Munich comfortably in midweek. As a result, they are currently at the top of the table in the Premier League and the Champions League.
Now, Arteta’s side will face off against Chelsea in the English top flight this weekend. The Blues are currently second in the league, and Arsenal would be desperate to extend the gap at the top of the table by winning this game.
