Arsenal ‘extremely likely’ to sign Martin Zubimendi
Arsenal are reportedly ‘extremely likely’ to sign Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi, as per journalist James Benge.
After displaying impressive performances for La Real in the La Liga over the last few years, the Spaniard has been a subject of attention for several Premier League clubs in recent transfer windows.
Liverpool were keen on signing him last summer to reinforce the midfield department and even formalised their interest. However, the player eventually decided to reject a move to the Merseyside club to stay at his boyhood club.
Now, speaking on GiveMeSport, Benge says that after turning down Arne Slot’s side and other Premier League clubs, Zubimendi has decided that this is the right time for him to take the next step and he thinks Arsenal would be the right destination for him.
Mikel Arteta’s side are ‘extremely likely’ to secure his service after managing to convince the player to move to the Emirates Stadium following a very long and hard attempt.
Zubimendi to Arsenal
The deal hasn’t been done yet as Arsenal will have to trigger his release clause – which is set at around £51m. The North London club could even opt to get the deal done by paying a little more than his release clause for a more favourable payment structure.
The journalist said:
“Zubimendi is extremely likely. It’s not done yet, because, of course, they have to pay the release clause, but messages have come from Arteta and the Arsenal side for a very long time, convincing Zubimendi, who rejected the chance to go to Liverpool, and has rejected the chance to go elsewhere in the Premier League, when it’s been put to him in the past that this is the time to move and this is the club to move to.
“So they have to go and pay the release clause and my expectation is that they will either do that or, actually more likely, will go a little bit over the release clause, just to sweeten the payment terms.”
Thomas Partey and Jorginho’s contracts are set to expire at the end of this season. So, it seems the Gunners are planning their future without the duo.
Zubimendi is considered one of the best midfielders in La Liga and has the necessary technical qualities to play in Arteta’s system. Therefore, he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they eventually manage to secure his service.
