Pundit tips Arsenal to sign Man City flop Kalvin Phillips
Former striker turned pundit Darren Bent has claimed that Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips would be a shrewd signing for Arsenal.
The Gunners have seemingly been contemplating signing a new midfielder next year as a potential replacement for Thomas Partey – who has been struggling with injury problems in recent years.
Several players have been mentioned as potential targets for the North London club with Andre Trindade, Joao Palhinha and Arthur Vermeeran being among them. But, Douglas Luiz is reportedly their primary option.
However, speaking on talkSPORT, Bent has tipped Arsenal to sign Phillips from Man City. The pundit states that Declan Rice in the deep-lying playmaker position and Phillips in the box-to-box role would be a perfect combination for Arsenal’s engine room.
Bent said:
“I would take him[Phillips] at Arsenal. No, see Declan Rice, I think sit in, perfect for him. But I’d take him.”
Pundit tips Arsenal to sign Phillips
After moving to the Etihad Stadium in a £45m last year, Phillips has struggled to break into Pep Guardiola’s starting eleven in recent times. So, it has been suggested that the Englishman has become frustrated with the lack of playing time at the Citizens and is willing to leave Man City in January to play regular first-team football elsewhere.
Phillips previously showcased his qualities during his time at Leeds United, however, after taking the next step in his career, he has found it difficult to perform at the highest level.
So, there is a question mark whether he would be able to bolster Arsenal’s midfield if he were to move to the North London club, considering Mikel Arteta plays a similar system to Guardiola.
I think Arsenal could take a chance by acquiring his service in January to bolster their engine room, however, only if he is available for a loan deal as spending a big fee to sign him would be a big risk, given he has struggled in recent times.
It is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually opt to make a concrete approach to sign Phillips if the midfielder becomes available in the upcoming transfer window.
