Arsenal vs Newcastle: FA Cup preview with team news and betting odds

Arsenal will look to book their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup when we take on Newcastle United at the Emirates on Saturday evening.

It’s been a frustrating few months as we suffered our worst start to a league season in over 60 years and only a few weeks ago some pundits were talking about Arsenal as being in a relegation battle as we sat 15th after our defeat at Everton.

However, Mikel Arteta has managed to get our campaign back on track as we secured a vital 3-1 win over Chelsea on Boxing Day before beating Brighton at the Amex Stadium three days later. An impressive 4-0 win at WBA last weekend made it three wins on the spin and lifted Arsenal up to 11th – just six points off the top four.

So it’s safe to say we’re heading into the FA Cup third round in far more positive mood but we’ve been handed a tough task after being drawn against Premier League rivals Newcastle United at the Emirates.

Betting odds

Arsenal are currently priced as the 1/2 favourites with the bookmakers to win inside the ninety minutes while we are 1/5 to qualify for the next round including extra-time and penalties. Newcastle are 5/1 to win in regulation time and 10/3 to make it through to the next round. The draw can be backed at 18/5.

The Gunners have rediscovered some form in recent games and will be confident of seeing-off Newcastle at the Emirates. A 3-1 Arsenal win can be backed at odds of 9/1 and if we add Alexandre Lacazette as the first scorer, the odds increase to a whopping 48/1.

Team news

Arsenal could welcome Thomas Partey back into the squad after the midfielder has been in full training this week having recovered from a thigh injury that’s hampered him in recent weeks.

Gabriel will also be assessed as he’s missed the last three games after testing positive for Covid but Arteta has no other serious injury issues to contend with so he has a strong squad available.

The Spaniard could opt to freshen things up in the FA Cup with the likes of David Luiz, Mo Elneny, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Willian, Gabriel Martinelli and Nicolas Pepe all pushing for recalls.

As for Newcastle, they’ll be without Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser while Jamaal Lascelles and Jamal Lewis are doubts.

Prediction

Arsenal have finally found some form and looked a completely different side against WBA last weekend. Another display like that, and we should have no problems seeing-off Newcastle on home soil.

Arteta is likely to rotate but Arsenal can still put-out a side packed with quality even if we make a number of changes and I’m confident we’ll do enough to book our place in the next round.
