Arsenal poised to launch audacious late swoop for £62m La Liga Star

We’re heading in to the business end of the summer window and according to a report in the Express, Arsenal are poised to launch an audacious late swoop to try and sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

Arsene Wenger has been criticised by many sections of the fan-base for his lack of activity so far as we’ve only signed Sead Kolasinac on a free transfer while Alexnader Lacazette arrived in a club record £52m deal from Lyon.

We’ve been linked with a whole host of players in recent weeks but as it stands we’re not close to signing anyone and Wenger confirmed earlier today that our proposed move for Thomas Lemar is now ‘dead’.

I’ve said all summer we’ll be in for another long season if we don’t sign a centre-back and central midfielder but it looks like Wenger is keen to further strengthen his attacking options, if reports are to be believed.

The Express are citing Diario Gol as saying that Arsenal are poised to launch an audacious late move to try and lure Madrid striker Karim Benzema to the Emirates before the window shuts.

The French international has long been linked with a move to Arsenal and the Spanish publication suggests that Wenger wants to finally sign the front-man and that a move is more likely if we end up cash-in on Alexis Sanchez.

Benzema’s place at Madrid is coming under increasing pressure as he only managed to score 11 La Liga goals last season and the European champions are still in the hunt for Kylian Mbappe.

If Madrid win the race to sign the Monaco sensation then they may decide to cash-in on Benzema and Calciomercato reported earlier this month that the striker could be available for around £62m.

It seems the 29-year-old could be offered a fresh start here in north London, however, I’d personally take these reports with a huge pinch of salt as I’d be stunned if Wenger was to splash out on another striker.

We’ve bought Lacazette and Olivier Giroud is now staying so I don’t see any room for another striker in the squad unless the club are planning to sell Danny Welbeck during the closing stages of the window.

Benzema would be a huge upgrade on Welbeck but I won’t be getting my hopes up and would prefer the club focussed on strengthening at the back and in midfield.
