[Ratings] Arsenal 2-1 Chelsea: Mertesacker outstanding for superb Gunners

By on May 27, 2017

Aaron Ramsey scored the winner again as Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley this evening to win the FA Cup for the third time in four seasons.

Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring in the fourth minute and while Victor Moses was sent off for a second yellow midway through the second half, Chelsea still equalised with 15 minutes to go via a deflected Diego Costa effort.

However, we restored our advantage minutes later as Aaron Ramsey headed home from an Olivier Giroud cross to win the club for a record thirteenth time.

Here are my ratings:

Ospina  7/10 | At fault for the Chelsea equaliser as he should certainly have saved it despite the slight deflection, but he still made a couple of vital saves.

Holding  8/10 | Could perhaps have done better to stop Costa shooting for his goal but was otherwise superb. Such an exciting talent and held his own on the big stage.

Mertesacker  9.5/10 | Outstanding. To perform like he did on his first start of the season is unbelievable. Put his body in front of everything, positionally he was spot on and dealt with Costa for most of the game. MOTM

Monreal  9/10 | Pushed Per close for the MOTM award as Nacho was excellent. Great block to deny Costa at 1-0 and gave his all at the back.

Bellerin  8/10 | A real handful down the right wing and he almost scored a stunning goal in the second half.

Xhaka  8/10 | Another superb display. Controlled things from the middle of the park, especially in the first half.

Ramsey  8.5/10 | Excellent performances from Rambo. Didn’t stop all evening, made some great runs and it paid off as he headed home the winner at Wembley.

Oxlade-Chamberlain   7/10 | Performed admirably in the unfamiliar left wing-back role. Didn’t put a foot wrong.

Sanchez   8/10 | Opened the scoring with a lovely finish and played a stunning ball in the build-up for the winner. Made the difference again when it mattered most.

Ozil  8/10 | Saw one cleared off the line to make it 2-0 and hit the post with a clear chance to make it 3-1 late on. Worked hard and put himself about. When he plays like this, he’s world class.

Welbeck  7.5/10 | Worked his socks off up front and lead the line superbly well. Linked up well with the rest of the attack and movement caused Chelsea problems.

Subs:

Giroud  7/10 | Instant impact as his cross teed-up Ramsey for the winner.

Coquelin  5/10 | Booked within seconds of coming on for a stupid foul.

So a frustrating season ends on a high as we secure another piece of silverware following one of our best performances of the campaign. Say what you like about Wenger but he knows how to win an FA Cup!
