Agent confirms active clause as Arsenal linked with £19m defender

By on June 10, 2016

The agent of Ricardo Rodriguez has confirmed the defender now has an active release clause in his Wolfsburg contract amid reported interest from Arsenal.

Rodriguez has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates in recent weeks with the International Business Times reporting last month that Arsene Wenger was ready to meet a reported £19m release clause in his contract.

There were doubts in some corners of the press as to whether this clause existed, however, the full-backs agent, Gianluca Di Domenico, has now confirmed the player does indeed have an active termination clause – although he doesn’t reveal how much it’s worth.

Domenico is quoted by the Express as saying:

“Today, Ricardo Rodriguez has a termination clause, which was not there before. You have to respect the contracts,”

So now we know for certain that we can sign Rodriguez if we meet his clause – which is reportedly set at £19m – and the player himself fuelled speculation of a potential move to Arsenal last week after being quoted in the Evening Standard as saying that he’d like to follow Swiss team mate Granit Xhaka – who he shares a room with while on international duty – to the Emirates.

When asked about joining Arsenal, he said:

“That would be exciting, yes, especially because the room arrangement at Arsenal would be fixed as well.”

However, Roma have also been linked with the full-back and Mr Domenico has suggested that Rodriguez could be tempted to Serie A if an offer was put on the table as he’s ‘loves’ Italy.

The agent continued:

“Ricardo loves Italy so much, so surely if there was a serious proposal we would see. But we need to see if there will be.”

Let’s be honest, we can offer a lot more than the likes of Roma and Rodriguez has made it clear he’s keen on coming to Arsenal so I think the deal is there if we really want it to happen.

Kieran Gibbs is expected to leave the Emirates this summer in search of first team football after losing his place to Nacho Monreal and Rodriguez would be an excellent replacement.

The Swiss star would be able to settle in to life in England by acting as backup for Monreal next season before taking over the first team shirt in 12 months time – at which point Nacho will be 31 and there’s always been talk of him returning to Spain to see out the final years of his career.

Wenger has shown his intent in the market with the signing of Xhaka and the pursuit of Vardy, so let’s hope that if he wants Rodriguez he acts swiftly and activates his release clause.
