[Photos] TBT: Arsenal players celebrate winning the title at Spurs

We won the league at White Hart Lane“……

12 years ago today marked one of the greatest days in Arsenal history as we secured the Premier League title at White Hart Lane, the home of rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

We made the short trip across North London on April 25, 2004, having yet to taste defeat in our previous 33 league games and with Chelsea losing to Newcastle in the early kick off, we knew a point would be enough to secure the title.

Patrick Vieira opened the scoring in the third minute before Robert Pires doubled our lead inside the opening half hour. Jamie Redknapp lashed home to make it 1-2 and while Robbie Keane netted a late penalty to earn the hosts a 2-2 draw, we had done enough to be crowned champions. At White Hart Lane!

To really rub salt in to their wounds, the likes of Henry, Pires, Bergkamp, Vieira, Cole, Lauren, Toure, Gilberto and Edu celebrated on Tottenham’s own pitch in front of the travelling Arsenal fans and continued the celebrations in to the changing room.

That team of world class warriors went on to become invincible, lifting the title without losing a game, and extended that record in to the following season before a 49-game unbeaten run was controversially ended by a dodgy Wayne Rooney dive at Old Trafford.

Unfortunately this was the last time we won the title, and while it’s been painful to watch us implode yet again this year, it’s comforting to know we still have memories such as these to enjoy.

Yes, Tottenham will almost certainly finish above us for the first time in 20 years. They may even go on to win the title for the first time in over 50 years. However, they WON’T win it at the Emirates, and they WON’T be invincible.

Club photographer Stuart MacFarlane has been posting some photos from that triumphant day 12 years ago on Twitter this afternoon, enjoy:

And soon after this some numpty invented St. Totteringham’s day forever highlighting the fact that Arsenal no longer challenge for the league and now exist solely to end above Tottenham. Celebrating this has become the moment when Arsenal fans think they are laughing at their rivals when, in fact, teams capable of winning the league are laughing at them
