‘He looks promising in training’ – Wenger’s update on injured star
Arsene Wenger has giving Arsenal.com an update on Danny Welbeck and says the attacker is looking promising in training after finally recovering from a knee injury.
Welbeck suffered what was initially thought to be a minor injury way back in April of last year but was ruled out for several months after being forced to undergo surgery in September.
The attacker returned to full training last week and Wenger has now confirmed he’ll play at least 45 minutes for the under-21’s against Brighton this afternoon as he continues to work his way back to full fitness.
The boss says the signs are looking promising from what he’s already seen from Welbeck on the training pitch but it’s still going to be up to three weeks before we see him in the first team again.
Wenger told the clubs website:
on Welbeck…
He is playing today with the under-21s, for one half at least. I believe that he needs to play two or three games before thinking about coming back into the first team. We can organise games internally without being official games and I think in the next three weeks he should be available. He has not played for 10 months so we need to be patient with him. He has good basic fitness but after it is competitive decision-making and he needs to get used to that again. We are a bit relieved because with such an injury, you never know how a player will come back. But he looks promising in training.
It’s great news to have Welbeck on the verge of his comeback as I think we’ve sorely missed him this season and as was shown on Tuesday night, we could certainly do with another threat in front of goal.
Let’s hope Danny is able to get a few games under his belt and get back in the first team soon. As long as he doesn’t suffer any setbacks, we could see him in the squad to face Barcelona on the 23rd or he may even make his comeback against former club Manchester United on the 28th.
What’s the betting he scores the winner at Old Trafford?!
