Arsenal ‘frontrunners’ to sign Real Madrid star Gonzalo Garcia
Arsenal are plotting a swoop to sign Real Madrid centre-forward Gonzalo Garcia in the summer, according to Fichajes.
The Gunners made significant reinforcement last summer to bolster various positions, with Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, and Eberechi Eze all joining to reinforce Mikel Arteta’s attack.
While Gyokeres, who recently led Sweden to World Cup qualification, has scored 11 Premier League goals, with a large chunk of those numbers coming in the second half of the season, Gabriel Jesus, on the other hand, struggled to make an impact due to incessant injuries.
With rumours about his possible departure having gained weight recently, the Gunners are already exploring potential center-forward positions and were recently linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Christian Kofane.
The latest name on the club’s radar is Madrid’s Garcia, who came to the limelight in last summer’s Club World Cup campaign, where he finished as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals.
However, Madrid’s star-studded attack has made it challenging for him to find opportunities this season. Still, the youngster has shown promise whenever called upon, netting six goals and providing two assists, with interest now growing.
Now, according to Fichajes, Arsenal have earmarked Garcia as the ideal option to reinforce Arteta’s frontline next season.
‘Frontrunners’
Despite Gyokeres finding form in the second half of the campaign, the report adds that the Gunners boss is not entirely satisfied with his performances, leading the club to explore another technical forward with Garcia now being eyed.
It appears Arsenal are looking to accelerate the youngster’s arrival, as the Spanish outlet claims the Premier League leaders are already planning the finances required for the deal, which would also involve funds from the sale of Jesus, valued at around £21m.
However, despite Newcastle United’s interest in Garcia, Arsenal remain the ‘frontrunners’ in the race for the 22-year-old, having presented their project to his representatives, according to the report.
Arsenal are enjoying arguably their best season in over a decade, currently sitting nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table while also having a strong chance of achieving a treble with a win against Southampton on Saturday.
García is likely to find Arsenal’s recent surge and their ability to remain competitive in Europe beyond this season alluring, although he’s likely to command a fee well above his £26m Transfermarkt valuation.
