Arsenal preparing formal offer to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle

Arsenal are preparing to submit a formal offer to Newcastle United for the potential transfer of Anthony Gordon to the Emirates Stadium next summer, according to Fichajes.

Following his move to Everton from Liverpool at 11, Gordon featured regularly through the ranks for the Toffees’ youth teams before making his Premier League debut at 18, in the 1–1 draw with West Ham United.

After 11 years at the club, the versatile winger secured a big-money move to Newcastle and has since enjoyed a meteoric rise with the club and individually, most notably earning 17 England caps as well as being part of the Newcastle squad that ended the club’s seven-decade wait for a title by winning the Carabao Cup last year.

Despite the Magpies’ poor form this season, Gordon has remained a key player for the team, particularly in the Champions League, where he has provided two assists and netted ten goals in 12 games, including a hat-trick against Qarabag, becoming just the third Newcastle player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League and the first to do so in the knockout rounds.

With 22 goal contributions this season, it’s no surprise interest is beginning to grow in the winger, with Fichajes reporting that Arsenal have earmarked Gordon as a ‘top priority’ to reinforce their attack in the summer.

The report adds that Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is looking to build a core of English players in his team and believes the 25-year-old is the ideal option for his squad, citing his speed, dribbling, and defensive work rate as a good fit for his style of play.

As such, Arsenal are now preparing to submit an audacious formal offer of around £82m to sign him ahead of other rivals, Fichajes adds.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has previously described Gordon as ‘outstanding’, and his 17 goals and 5 assists in all competitions validate that claim.

Arteta currently has Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, and the versatile Noni Madueke as left-wing options, but none have really matched Gordon’s output this season.

Interestingly, Martinelli and Trossard, along with Bukayo Saka on the right wing, each have 16 goal contributions, although the Brazilian leads the trio in goals this season (11).

Recent media reports have speculated about a possible departure among Arteta’s left wingers, making Gordon a good fit to replace any of the available options should they depart in the summer.
