Arsenal to table fresh offer as Wenger eyes last ditch signing
We’ve got some more transfer news to bring you tonight with the Express reporting that Arsenal are set to table an improved offer for Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell.
The 19-year-old has been linked with a move to the Emirates in recent weeks with widespread reports last week suggesting we saw our opening £3m offer rejected by the Foxes [via the Mirror].
Claudio Ranieri’s men are desperate to keep hold of the England Under-20 international and have been trying to tie him down to a new deal, while the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham have also been credited with an interest.
However, it looks like Arsene Wenger is determined to land Chilwell as the Express are reporting that we’re now set to go back in with an improved offer, believed to be in the region of £4m.
We’ll have to wait and see whether that will be enough to persuade Leicester to cash-in but the newspaper says Arsene is hoping to get a deal wrapped-up before the window closes on Monday evening.
Chilwell broke in to the Leicester first team earlier this season and he’s tipped to be a real star of the future having already represented England at youth level from U18 to U20.
With doubts growing over the long-term future of Kieran Gibbs, it looks like Wenger has identified Chilwell as the ideal replacement but he’s also capable of playing at right-back so with Mathieu Debuchy expected to leave on loan this month, perhaps the boss also sees him as a possible back-up to Bellerin during the second half of the season.
Arsenal to sign Nigerian midfielder
Let’s see how things develop over the coming days but Chilwell could become our second major signing of the January window following the arrival of Mohamed Elneny earlier this month.
