Midfielder undergoes medical after agreeing £60k-a-week Arsenal deal

Arsene Wenger has all-but confirmed reports that Arsenal are closing in on the signature of Basel midfielder Mohamed Elneny.

The Egyptian international has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates over the past week or so with speculation on Monday suggesting we had agreed a fee in the region of £5m.

Further reports in the Mirror last night claimed that Elneny had agreed personal terms on a contract worth £60,000-a-week and had undergone his medical on Tuesday.

The results of the medical are not yet known and the midfielder must also be granted a work permit, but neither are thought to be a stumbling block and the deal is expected to go through over the next few days.

Unsurprisingly, Arsene was quizzed about these reports at his pre-match press conference this morning and he all-but confirmed the news after saying he couldn’t announce anything at the moment because the deal is not yet concluded.

In a further hint, the boss also confirmed that he is already working hard on potential deals ahead of a ‘busy’ winter transfer window.

When asked by reporters about a deal for Elneny, Wenger is quoted as saying by Arsenal.com:

“Unfortunately we cannot announce anything at the moment about this player [Elneny] because nothing has been concluded,”

“I’ll be busy, that’s for sure. I am already busy and I said already one month ago we are a bit short to deal with all the competitions we face, especially in midfield. We will be busy, yes.”

I think it’s safe to say we are very close to wrapping up the deal following these comments. If there was nothing in it, Arsene would have said ‘we aren’t on the case’ or something to that effect.

Elneny is a talented 23-year-old who is capable of playing as a holding or box-to-box midfielder so he’ll give us another vital option in the middle of the park during the second half of the season if he doesn’t end up completing a move to the Emirates.

    Mohd can give some physical presence to the gunners md.But at 5ft 11 is he the type who can stand up to the giant sized bullies?Probably.
    Coquelin is around his height but I think being aggressive helps.
    NU will be fighting for their lives. Against battling sides,Wenge r can forget about ballet soccer.As in the Saints game,I had afeeling that Ozil could be subject to robust tackles.Indeed it turned out that way.And the ref didn’t help by not dishing out the yc early in the game.Some of the tackles could have resulted in a rc.
    Hopefully Arsenal can win again.As I have said there are no easy games in the epl.
