Champions League: Nightmare Draw As Arsenal Get Fenerbache

By on August 9, 2013

The draw for the Champions League play-off round took place today and it’s been a nightmare draw for Arsenal, who will have to overcome a tricky two-legged tie against Fenerbache.

The Turkish giants finished second in the league behind Galatasaray last season but their participation in the competition is subject to a pending disciplinary hearing after they were handed a two-year ban for match fixing.

I have no idea what happens if they are kicked out, but presumably the team they beat (Salzburg) in the previous round gets reinstated, or failing that we will play the team who finished third in the Turkish league – which was Besiktas.

Either way, it’s not a good draw for us. The tie’s will be played on August 20/21 and 27/28th with Arsenal playing the first leg away from home.

UPDATE: I’m reading that the outcome of Fenerbache’s appeal will not be known until AFTER the two-legged tie, so even if we lose we may still be reinstated if their ban is upheld. So maybe it’s that bad a draw afterall.

What do you think of the draw? Happy?

Hi Gaz this ditherer is not a joke because he just ain’t funny. Oh take no notice of this Darran who comes across as a member of the “in arsene we trust brigade” who we could certainly do without at this club. These foolish people don’t appear to mind that we ain’t won sweet F.A in the past 8 years, along with broken promises, lies, lack of signings etc and they’ll still take Wengers side…Are these really Arsenal supporters?….If they are they’ve got a funny way of showing it.

Darren is simply being rational. A draw is made and Arsenal are drawn against Fernabache how is that a nightmare? This is not the first time that Arsenal have participated in playoffs, and by their very nature playoffs involve teams that were top in their respective leagues the past season. When Arsenal was drawn against the Italian club in 2011/2012 you people said the same thing but if my memory is correct the club went through. Fernabache is a good team and so is any other team that is in the qualifiers. At the end of it our progress to the group stages will be determined by the performance of our squad not your wish list.

Greetings Angel Gooner I believe what Gaz means is that Wenger hasn’t kept to his promise of new bigger money signings. Yes we may well win this game with last years team but why take a risk with our prestige and a lot of money involved? All the top quality has already gone to other clubs while Nero fiddled! whoops! sorry! Wenger diddled and dithered….

Why is it a nightmare draw? Apart from Pacos, who might turn out to be a tidy side anyway, I’m not sure any of the teams are an easy ride.

Such sensatinalist over reactions really do attract the sky sports media fed lemons don’t they.

Hmmmm we have fallen so so low that we now worry about fenerbache?? No disrespect intended but fenerbache should be worried about swansea for christsake, what have we turn into? Eh a team that won without conceding @the home of the current european champions worried about a turkish side? Well its no coincidence when we the fans look down on our team. Even as we are, we are suppose to put the contest to bed even from the 1st led @ istanbul. (not saying we should’nt sign before then)
