Report: Fabregas Tells Friends He Wants Man Utd Move – Are They For Real?!

By on July 26, 2013

So, the latest report‘ doing the rounds this morning claims that Cesc Fabregas has informed friends he wants to quit Barcelona and move to Manchester United this summer.

United have been very public in their pursuit of the former Arsenal skipper this summer but their latest bid over over £30m was rejected by Barca – who wrote to the champions to make it clear Fabregas was not for sale this summer. However, United don’t seem to have got the message and David Moyes confirmed on Thursday that their pursuit of the midfielder was “ongoing”.

Sky Sports News claimed earlier in the week that Fabregas was ‘considering his future’ after Barcelona failed to give him the assurances he wanted with regards to first team football next season, and now the Daily Mail are reporting that the 26-year-old has decided he wants to return to the Premier League and link up with his old pal Robin van Persie at Old Trafford.

The newspaper suggests that Cesc has “told friends” in England he wants a move and is “attracted by the promise of regular football at United”, and although Barca remain adamant he’s not for sale, that could change if the player hands in a transfer request.

I’m not sure where to start with this so-called ‘exclusive’, the entire thing is utterly ridiculous. Cesc may be contemplating his future due to his lack of status at the Nou Camp but he won’t have his heart set on a move to United, of that you can be sure.

I’ve gone over my reasons why Fabregas wont join United many times – you can read them here if you want – but the simple fact is he’s a TRUE Arsenal man (unlike RVP) and has stated on several occasions he would only ever return to England to play for us.

‘Apart from Arsenal and Barcelona, I don’t see myself playing anywhere else,’ Fabregas told Sky Sports News in December 2011

‘I will definitely be going back (to Arsenal) whenever I have time to watch games and to see the guys, and you never know in the future, why not?

‘I hope I will stay here for a very long time, and maybe even retire here, but why not? In life, you can never say never, and if there is one place to go back to, it is Arsenal for sure.’

Is that not clear enough? Sure feelings can change over time, but the fact is Cesc HAS come back to the Grove to watch games and still keeps in regular contact with his old mentor Arsene Wenger – who he calls his ‘footballing father’. Do United really think Cesc will turn down the chance to return to Arsenal and work under Wenger again for David Moyes? I mean, seriously?!

The press can bang on about United’s interest all they want but the fact remains that Arsenal are in pole position if Barcelona want to sell, as we have a buy-back clause. The club worked extremely hard to get the clause in Cesc’s contract when we sold him in 2011 and it was designed so we would be in a great position to buy him at a reasonable price if he ever became available. Barca probably only agreed to it as they thought Cesc would retire there, but if the player pushes for a move this summer, you can be sure we’ll be front of the queue and according to Cesc’s own words – there’s only one club he’d every join.

You’re going to have so much egg on your face when he signs for Utd, the champions of England. Did you honestly believ RVP would be in Utd colurs two years ago. Surely it’s taught you no to be so bold in your claims.

“Do United really think Cesc will turn down the chance to return to Arsenal and work under Wenger again for David Moyes? I mean, seriously?!”

I don’t know if he will go to Utd but why would he go back to Arsenal where he spent 8 patient years waiting for something to happen and it never did, and now the chances of it happening (winning the EPL / ECL) are even less likely. He wants to WIN things so if he came back to UK it would most likely be Utd / City / Chelsea above Arsenal. Sorry that’s just the way it is

Arsenal have Cesc tied up, they have first refusal, and if Baca was to sell him they only get half the final transfer fee.
So Man U would have to pay £70 million for Barca to get the £35 million back they paid for him.

I also recall Moyes calling Fabregas a thug and accused him of spitting at a member of Everton staff.
And Cesc throwing pizza over the red conked one.

You Arsenal fans are deluded. Your buy back clause doesn’t mean you can get him for £25m!! It is a first refusal clause which means that should they accept an offer, Arsenal will have the opportunity to match it before it is completed. Then it would still be down to cesc to decide. I do believe he has a place in heart for Arsenal, and that he’d probably prefer to go there over United…..however, it is all about where he thinks he can get regularly playing time AND WIN TROPHIES…..which I think he may not feel Arsenal can guarantee. How many years is it now without a trophy?

Dragon, you’re ill informed and deluded.

Arsenal DO have a £25m buy back clause, and as said above, also have a 50% future transfer return. So if Manu offer £50m then arsenal can match it by paying £25m.

Even if Manu offer more than £50m (remember you’ve offered well under that so far) barca CANNOT turn down our £25m only fabregas can

how many years since your manager won a trophy? Have you bought anyone of note yet? Moyes has already broken Van Persie, hope he’s not building his team around him. We made that mistake for 4 years – you play great when he’s fit, and slide down the table when he’s not.

      July 26, 2013 at 10:52 am

As for guaranteed to win trophies, only a moron would think that.

Before SAF Manu went 18 years without any trophies. In that time they did not maintain a top 4 spot, they got relegated.

Everyone knows that arsenal have been massively constrained financially, while also having to compete with unlimited money of Chelsea (which also drained our talent and inflated our wage bill).

Every year we needed to make an extra £15 million out of transfers, now we start with +£40m.

    • mystic

      July 26, 2013 at 11:10 am

I think you will find that Arsenal have a first option clause, that states if they choose to use has a set £25m fee.

By the way you are basing the lack of trophies on the fact that Arsenal were not bettering themselves, they were standing still at best – were they to buy Suarez & Fabregas (maybe Cesar?) this summer, on top of Cazorla / Giroud / Podolski last time. I think you are talking about a seriously different Arsenal.

  7. sid

    July 26, 2013 at 10:21 am

    The buy back clause….

Fabregas joined for a basic fee of €29m (£25.6m), with a £4m pay-off waived by Fabregas, as well as £4.4m of further add-ons contingent on Barcelona winning more trophies. There is also a 50 per cent sell-on clause, should the Spanish club offload him in the future, and a buy-back option for Arsenal. Barcelona have also given up any claims to youngsters Jon Miquel Toral and Hector Bellerin, who left them to join Arsenal in the summer. Soon after the deal was reached, Wenger said that the club sold Fabregas for a “reduced fee”, and that an auction for him would have brought more money in.

My God, Man Utd fans are deluded as hell.. The only reason we’ve never won trophies for the past 8 years is because of players who aren’t patient in staying in the team in the first place! Every year, there’s always a player who wants to get out, just to win trophies as an excuse. We could’ve won trophies if they actually stayed! Now is the time Fabregas can come back to Arsenal. Why? The team Arsenal has right now, no one wants to leave. Heck, they have a great bond together! You honestly think Man Utd is the best team he can go to right now? HELL NO! Moyes just took over from the great SAF. He will have a long time to settle down. The team in itself is somewhat of a disarray. Hell, it’s reminiscent of the time Arsenal 2008 -2011 where they keep losing players!

  9. wambam

    July 26, 2013 at 10:29 am

Like you I can’t see Cesc moving to Utd.

This is set up at each stage to be an embarrassment for Moyes.

If Barca don’t accept a bid he’s wasted the summer chasing an impossible target.
If Barca do accept a bid it will have to be in the region of £60m as 50% is due to Arsenal + Barca still owe Arsenal £10m from the Cesc purchase.
and if that happens, Arsene can trigger the buy back clause for £25m.
Barca still owe Arsenal £10m in instalment payments, so Arsenal only need to pay them £15m to get our Cescy football back.

Which leads me to think Moyes is a moron. He should go for Sneijder at Galatasary – £10m? He’d jump at the chance.

      FROM THE TELEGRAPH

Although Barcelona have placed a huge buy-out clause of €200 million (£176 million) in Fabregas’s contract, they have agreed to give Arsenal first refusal should they eventually decide to sell.

If Arsenal were to refuse that option, they would still be entitled to half of Fabregas’s next transfer fee.

I will use euros and the conversion from pounds is a guesstimation from the time of the transfer, but these are the key points to his contract and what it means for Arsenal should FCB decide to sell.

Length: 5 years, 7m€ per year.

Initial Fee: 35m€ paid in two parts. 6m€ loyalty fee due to transfer waived by Cesc.

Add Ons: 6m€ for 1 CL or 2 La Liga titles in 3 years, was later reported to be broken down per La Liga title.

Clauses: 30m€ First Option, Right of First Refusal clause. This is the one most people don’t get. FCB have to either get a bid in and accept and no matter that offer, say it is 40m€, we have a right of first refusal to buy him back for 30m€.

Or if FCB decide to sell, we have a right of first refusal for the 30m€.

We do NOT have an option where we can go in blindly, pony up 30m€ and FCB HAVE to sell to us, this is where people are getting confused.

In the contract there is also a 50% Sell On clause, meaning, if there is a bid for him and we pass on buying him with our first option clause, we get 50% of the transfer fee.
Edit – We would get 50% of what is left over above the 35m€ base fee FCB paid for him. So if a 40m€ is accepted and we pass on re-signing him, we get 50% of 5m€.

  12. Chris

    July 26, 2013 at 11:08 am

I dont understand what the whole argument is about.

Things are very simple. IF, and only IF, Barcelona decides to sell to ManU they will tell Arsenal if they are willing to match that offer, I believe Arsenal will definitely match any offer for Cesc and then it all comes down to the player. Simple as that.

Profit money, shmofit money, thats BS, if Cesc wants to leave Barca he will reveal where he wants to go, ManU cannot snub him without Arsenal having a say, and the player ultimately having the final say

    • mystic

      July 26, 2013 at 11:29 am

It is worth remembering that Arsenal don’t have to match any offer from Utd, Barca must decide whether to accept something from United or simply use it as tool to get Arsenal to show their hand.

There is actually nothing to stop Barca from doing a Real and changing the price at the last moment. Before you argue that if they accept the price they must stick by it – that would only be the case if they accepted in writing rather than just verbally (the latter being the more likely in the first place).

If cesc was to come to england it won’t be Arsenal for sure although that’s where his career began he would be more likely to go to the big names like manu, chelsea, mancity etc. In my personall opinion Cesc should go manu because his guranteed first play @ the team and will have good chemistry between RVP . If SAF didn’t retire I reckon we wud of god Cesc long time because SAF is a excellent manager and he could improve fabregas

You would think that Arsene would just have to say: ‘Sign for that shower and I will never speak to you again, you will never be invited back here to watch a game, you will be booed by the people you profess to love’. If he really is so cold and money motivated then he would go there and we know all we need to know about him. Does he realise how wet and miserable Manchester is – after 2 years in the Sun in Barcelona. Having to listen to that nausaeating nasal Manc accent!! Its not London where his girlfriend and child live – yes Cheshire is lovely but is not commutable from London. I just hope this is a bad dream – I don’t want to wake up and see the glory hunters with ‘our Cesc’.

I think Wenger is old and wise enough to know that Cesc is his own man and can do whatever he wants, he owes us NOTHING. If he wants to go there, let him. His choice not ours.

The Buy-Back clause inserted in the contract when Cesc was sold to FCB means Cesc cannot decide where he goes to as long as Arsenal wants him back. Note that Cesc signed the sell out contract which included the buy-back clause which means that he has practically agreed to return to Arsenal if FCB decides to sell him and Arsenal decides to exercise their right to buy-back.

    • FrancoisJeffers

      July 26, 2013 at 3:09 pm

“Cesc cannot decide where he goes to as long as Arsenal wants him back”

Not true. He does not HAVE to accept a contract from ANY club. If someone bids for Cesc, Barca have to also offer him to us as part of our first-refusal option. We also have a lower buy price. No footballer in the whole of world football has a clause which says they HAVE to go to a certain club if the club makes an offer, that would be ILLEGAL. Cesc can go to ANY club he wishes to as long as Barca accept an offer from them.

      • sid

        July 26, 2013 at 5:31 pm

Correct Scouser…. Cesc goes where he wants. But Arsenal get half the money from the sale.

  16. sid

    July 26, 2013 at 8:29 pm

Arsenal had Cesc tied down to a deal with 4 years left to run, Barca bbought a £40 million pound plus player for under £30 million.

Cesc expressed his wish to return hom as he split with his girlfriend so Arsene allowed Cesc to leave reluctently.

So this allowed Arsenal to put some heavy clauses into the deal otherwise Barca could have unloaded him straight away and made £15 million.

This also means Arsenal who gave Cesc his wish to join the club he chose rather than put him on the open market never got the fee that Cesc should have raised.

    So hence the clause.

She never wants to go back! LoL I know this
