Luis Suarez Talks-Up Arsenal Interest – Does He Fancy A Move To The Emirates?

By on July 9, 2013

An interesting development on the Luis Suarez front today after the Liverpool striker surprisingly welcomed interest from Arsenal and all-but confirmed he wants out of Anfield this summer.

Over the weekend, shock reports emerged that claimed we’d had a £30m offer turned down by Liverpool for the 26-year-old hitman. Many Gooners, myself included, thought it was all part of our ‘game’ with Real Madrid in trying to force them into selling us Gonzalo Higuain.

Then today new reports came out that claimed Chelsea were set to rival us by tabling a £40m offer for Suarez and the strikers agent was understood to have held talks with Brendan Rodgers and Ian Ayre on Monday, where he made it clear the striker wanted to join a club in the Champions League. Not Real Madrid. Not Bayern Munich. A team who could offer Champions League football.

Now, Suarez has given an interview to Uruguayan radio station Sport 890 where he’s claimed that no bids have come in for him yet, but he virtually confirmed he wants to leave Liverpool after claiming ‘the club and my agent know what I want’ and ‘a phone call could change everything’.

“There have been no offers yet, but Liverpool know exactly what is going on and what I want,”

“My agent is in charge, he knows what I want, I am resting and relaxed. I am due back in about ten days, on the 21st of July (for the friendly with Melbourne Victory)… a phone call could change everything.” Suarez said according to Sky Sports

Suarez gave absolutely zero indication he wants to stay at Anfield and I think it’s pretty obvious he wants to leave this summer. He was also asked about reported interest from Arsenal and Chelsea and interestingly he failed to dismiss the idea of joining another Premiership side, saying ‘it’s good to know that I am still valued by teams like Arsenal’:

“It’s good to know that I am still valued by teams like Arsenal. Friends call me up to ask if I am moving to Chelsea, to which I laugh.

“Don’t believe everything you read or hear! I am sometimes off the grid. I don’t even know where my phone is sometimes.”

Until now, I think it’s fair to say most people expected Suarez to join either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich if he was sold this summer. Not only because Liverpool wouldn’t want to sell to a domestic rival but also because Suarez had been complaining about his treatment here in England and it seemed likely he wanted to move abroad.

But I think if there was no chance of him joining another English team and he only had eyes for Madrid or Bayern, he’d have made that clear in his latest interview. There is absolutely no coincidence that Suarez has done an interview in his homeland 24 hours after his agent reportedly told Liverpool he wants to leave for a Champions League club. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Is he encouraging further interest from Arsenal or Chelsea here?  It’s difficult to say. A week ago I would have laughed at the thought of Suarez joining Arsenal, or Chelsea for that matter, but now it doesn’t seem all that crazy. Maybe he’s not ruling out a move elsewhere because Real Madrid are yet to make an official offer so he’s keeping his options open?

I still think he’ll leave Liverpool and his preferred destination is most likely Madrid, but perhaps he’s open to the idea of Arsenal or Chelsea if a switch to the La Liga giants doesn’t come around. Liverpool will no doubt do all they can to keep him and will be loath to sell him to another Premier League team but as we’ve seen in the past, if a player wants out and the buying team are prepared to pay, anything can happen. Torres to Chelsea is a perfect example of that. Could Suarez be next? We’ll have to wait and see….

I don’t know what to think.
It seems as if arsenal are sweeping one target under the carpet (higuain)
Then stepping up a level to the next (suarez) without actually signing anyone.
So who’s next Ronaldo and Messi?
