Wenger On Falcao, Song, Welbeck, Zigic + Whether He’ll Buy

Arsene Wenger was quizzed about his transfer plans after Arsenal’s nervy 1-0  win over Besiktas in the Champions League last night.

The media have been linking us with a whole host of strikers after Olivier Giroud was ruled out for four month and understandably it was a hot topic for discussion during his post-match interview.

Speaking to Arsenal.com after the game, the boss was asked about his reported interest in Radamel Falcao, Danny Welbeck and Nikola Zigic, and unsurprisingly, the boss was quick to play down any talk of signing the trio.

Speculation on Wednesday claimed we were lining-up a £20m loan deal for Falcao while some other papers believed we had made contact with Manchester United to enquire about Welbeck’s situation.

The most bizarre rumour was that of Zigic, with the forgotten Serbian strikers agent claiming Arsene had offered the 33-year-old a one-year deal to move to the Emirates and there were reports he was undergoing a medical.

However, while the boss admits he’s ‘open’ to strengthening in all areas of the team, he gave a simple ‘no’ when asked specifically about Falcao, Welbeck and Zigic.

There have also been reports suggesting that Alex Song may be set for a shock comeback as we continue to look for a versatile player who can play at centre-back and in midfield, but Arsene insists the Cameroonian wont be coming back to the Emirates.

He told Arsenal.com:

on whether he has contacted Zigic…

Zigic? No.

on Danny Welbeck…

No.

on whether Falco is in his price range…

No.

On Song…

Alex Song will not be coming back.

on the possibility of buying any more players…

If you want to make everyone happy, you just always buy players. But what is important is the performance on the football pitch and the solidarity we have shown tonight. Having said that, if you look at the players we have on the bench and those who are injured, we have players. I believe you cannot everytime buy when a player is injured.

on a defender or a midfielder being a priority…

We are open for any position as long as we feel that the player can strengthen the squad. Buy to buy, I don’t see the purpose of that. If we find the players who we feel can give something to our squad, we will do it in any position. We are open but it has to be enough to buy. It has to make sense.

Now we’ve secured our place in the group stages of the Champions League, I hope Arsene is going to go out and fill the areas we clearly need to strengthen. Another option up front is desperately needed, along with a world class defensive midfielder who can preferably fill-in at centre-back.

Four days left, money in the bank, over to you Arsenen…..

    Wenger has Snachez,Walcott,Cambell,Sanoga and Poldoski ,if he aint leaving as strikers.The problem is he doesn’t want to be held to ransom now that clubs know he needs another forward.
    If any of those guys can’t score and do so on a consistent basis,all the hot air after cl win will evaporate.
    Then what?More time will have ben wasted. I feel he shd go for Welback /Bony/Remy.These are the ones with epl experience rather than get someone cheaper who will take time to adapt.
    Btw,time is of the essence.

    Arsene,i have watched Arsenal three times this season,and I don’t like what I see,you will struggle against most teams you play,if you don’t
    strengthen up front and defence, “YOUR A MILION MILES BEHIND CHELSEA” I
    hate to say this,because I’m 100%an Arsenal Supporter,but unless you do,forget all about silverware,and league titles,because you will be lucky to finish In the top six.

      We were fourth last year with the same squad and we have added sanchez, we should do fine this year..

      walcott is almost back too and Diaby – well lets not count Diaby.

      Ozil, Ramsey, Wilshere, Cazorla and OX, I am expecting all of them to be better than last season..

      Plus – Joel campbell and Sanogo shoud be better..

      Squad is definetely better then last season. Top four is easy, winning the league will be hard.. it will be hard even if we add another three players – the depth of City and Chelsea squad in just insane. But only 11 players can play at once – so everytime our 11 players give stheir best, we can compete and be hopeful..

    Not only do the supporters and pundits want Wenger to buy, most supporters and pundits realise that Wenger is a deluded old man. They also know that this Arsenal team “on the pitch” as he says, has no chance of the Premier League or Champions League. Wenger is in his own world and it is a deluded world. Two more years of this man….No, No, No! I just read on a blog “Wenger will let you down”. That’s the real truth.

    I am not expecting too many signings. As it stands we are on our limits for the champions league a list and we still have to bring ospina Walcott and ryo into the squad. I am certain that ospina and walcott will replace macey and giroud. If we make any signings they will join ryo in hoping that some others will be delisted from the a squad. Sanogo, zelalem, diaby, coquelin and miquel are the most likely to make way, but whether ryo adds anymore than any of those is questionable.

    I dont like wengers attitude towards d transfer market he is trying to make d same mistake dat he made wen he refuse to bring fabregas back to d emirates now alex song is free an we need him back on the squad an wenger is turning a blind eye because of sentiment am afraid for us this season even with the likes of sanchez debuchy an chambers ozil we wont beat clubs like chelsea man city an liverpool even man u wit out players like song an a good striker like falcao wenger is sturborn an i dont like it because at the end of the day we all arsenal supporters will have a dissapointing season.

      Thanks yusuff,most fan just talk,talk n talk.These are the same fans who were calling for Wenger to be sack n now buy,buy n buy.look at man utd crisis today just from changing managers n Liverpool who couldn’t beat city with more than 8 signings but this same arsenal team beat city to lift d comm. shield,they played yaya,fernaldo cheichy,jovetic,Silva,nasri, Jesus Narva,corlara etc.A good team is not about names but d cohesiveness n d fighting spirit of d team n this arsenal has them.Lastly look was better than arsenal on paper (using names) but was trophy less.I support singer n know he will buy before 1st September.

    In my opinion, we do not need a striker but at least wenger should consider bringing defensive options. If anyone cared to see we really struggled against besiktas and if it would have been a better side like napoli or even porto we wouldn’t have qualified. Let’s not be blinded by the win we need to sign. Just wait n see how we’ll struggle with teams like chelsea, liverpool, man city, tottenham or even man u! You’ve already seen how we struggled with everton right?

    Actually all of us love Arsenal, and we are taking our our precious time to comment and watching our team playing but in my own little opinion I think we lack the quality of DM,we actually don’t need a striker.
