Arsenal Set To Make €40m Bid For 25-Goal Hitman – Report
According to reports today, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger wants to make Jackson Martinez his ‘marquee’ summer signing and will table a €40m bid at the end of the season.
We’ve long been linked with Martinez and Arsene intensified speculation once again after praising the Colombian international last week, saying he has what it takes to succeed in the Premier League.
The Metro are now citing reports coming out of Spain which claim that the boss wants to sign a proven goalscorer this summer and has made Martinez his No.1 target.
The report suggests that we’ll test Porto’s resolve with a €40m (£29.5m) offer and hope that it will be enough to bring the 28-year-old to the Emirates Stadium.
It’s certainly going to be interesting to see what Arsene decides to do with his forward options this summer. Olivier Giroud may divide opinion among the fanbase but Wenger is a huge supporter of the Frenchman’s.
Is he good enough to spearhead a title-winning side? I personally don’t think so. He’s not in the same class as the likes of Costa or Aguero, so for me we do need to sign a world class striker if we want to really compete with Chelsea and City.
But is Martinez the answer? Arsene is clearly a fan and his goal-scoring record is exceptional, with the Colombian scoring 25 goals in just 29 games this season to take his Porto career tally to 85 in 120.
Those are certainly some impressive figures but we’ve seen plenty of players with similar records struggle in England. Just look at Falcao at United. However, if we do sign a striker this summer it’s almost certain we’ll need to bring someone in from abroad and Martinez would be a realistic target.
