Arsenal interested in signing Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah, as per transfer expert David Ornstein.

After coming through Liverpool’s youth system, the 23-year-old initially struggled to break into the starting line-up. So, he joined Bristol Rovers on loan to play regularly and develop his career.

After returning, he made his first-team debut for the Reds in 2023 and mainly featured as a backup option. Still, he won a Premier League title and the Carabao Cup before joining Leverkusen last summer.

The youngster showed glimpses of his qualities at BayArena last campaign, scoring five goals and keeping 13 clean sheets in 44 appearances across all competitions.

After being impressed by his performances, Thomas Tuchel selected him in England’s World Cup squad, and Quansah helped his country finish third in this competition.

Now, on The Athletic, Ornstein reports that Arsenal are interested in reinforcing the defence by purchasing Quansah, but Leverkusen have no intention of letting him leave, with his existing deal set to run until 2030.

Liverpool held a €70m buyback clause, but it has now expired, and he doesn’t have a release clause. So, Leverkusen are in a strong position to keep hold of him, but Quansah is open to moving to the Emirates Stadium.

Quansah to Arsenal

Mikel Arteta likes having versatile defenders; as a result, Arsenal have signed Ben White, Jurrien Timber, Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapié and Riccardo Calafiori in recent years. The quintet can play in the centre-back and fullback positions.

Quansah is a similar type of defender. Although he is a 6ft 3in tall right-footed centre-back by trait, he can provide cover in the right-back position if needed.

He is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, and is efficient in defensive contributions. Moreover, he has the ability to chip in with some important goals.

Quansah is a talented player and isn’t a finished article yet. Moreover, having previously played for Liverpool, he is familiar with the Premier League’s physicality.

Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to secure his services this summer.
