Arsenal Hold Talks With Barcelona Over Audacious Midfielder Move
Some interesting reports coming out of Spain today claiming that Arsenal have spoken to Barcelona over the potential availability of midfielder Ivan Rakitic.
The Mirror cite Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo as reporting that Arsenal chiefs have held talks with the Catalans to express an interest in signing the Croatian international.
It appears we made our initial enquiry during the January transfer window when Rakitic was struggling for form but were told the player had no interest in quitting the Nou Camp soon soon after joining the club.
The 26-year-old only moved to Barca from Sevilla last summer but has failed to reproduce the kind of form that earned him the move. Although he has been a regular in Luis Enrique’s starting eleven, he’s only completed the full ninety minutes 12 times in 30 appearances and has been criticised by some sections of the Barca faithful.
However, it appears he’s not ready to give up on his dream just yet and is determined to be a success at the Spanish giants.
It remains to be seen whether we’ll have another go in the summer if Rakitic continues to struggle at the Nou Camp but if we do, we may face stiff competition for his signature as according to Mundo Deportivo, Manchester City have also made their interest known.
If these reports are accurate, then it was certainly an audacious attempt and Rakitic would have been an interesting signing had we managed to pull it off as you’d think another creative midfielder wouldn’t be high on Arsene Wenger’s priority list right now.
But given the rumours suggesting that Santi Cazorla has already agreed personal terms ahead of a potential summer move to Atletico Madrid, perhaps Wenger had identified Rakitic as a replacement for the Spaniard?
I’d be gutted to see Santi leave but Rakitic would be an excellent player to fill his boots if he was to head back to Spain this summer.
