Gabriel Heinze tried to sign Lautaro Martínez at Arsenal

Arsenal’s assistant manager Gabriel Heinze reportedly attempted to lure Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martínez to the Emirates Stadium this summer, as per the Daily Mail.

After moving to the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium from Racing Club back in 2018, the 29-year-old initially took time to settle into his new surroundings before establishing himself as one of the best forwards in Serie A.

He has enjoyed great success with the Nerazzurri in recent years, winning three league titles and several other domestic cup competitions. Martínez even helped his side reach the Champions League final twice.

Last season, the South American showcased his productivity, scoring 22 goals and registering six assists in 41 appearances across all competitions.

Alongside showcasing his qualities in club football, the forward has also enjoyed success on the international stage with Argentina, winning a World Cup, two Copa America trophies and a Finalissima.

Now, the Daily Mail report that Arsenal were keen on upgrading the striker position this summer after letting Gabriel Jesus join Barcelona and expressed their interest in several stars.

Heinze even made contact with Martínez, a fellow Argentine, last week to persuade him to move to the Emirates Stadium before the deadline, but Inter refused to let him leave, with his existing deal set to run until 2029.

Ultimately, Arsenal opted not to sign any striker. So, Mikel Arteta currently has Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres as options to deploy in the No.9 position.

However, after displaying inconsistent performances in his debut Premier League campaign, Gyokeres has struggled to break into Arteta’s starting line-up this season.

On the other hand, Havertz has been playing regularly in recent matches but struggled with fitness problems last term.

Martínez is a highly talented, experienced player. He possesses a poacher’s instinct inside the box, can link up the play, and works hard without possession.

So, the Inter star, valued at around £73m by Transfermarkt, would have been a shrewd acquisition for the North London club had they managed to secure his services.

Meanwhile, following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa, Arsenal are set to take on city rivals Chelsea in the Premier League this weekend.
