Arsenal reach agreement with Atlético to sign Alvarez

Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement with Atlético Madrid over a deal to sign Julián Álvarez, as per Spanish outlet AS.

The 26-year-old’s future has been the main subject of speculation throughout the summer. Barcelona have been trying to sign the forward, while Álvarez has been pushing hard to engineer the move.

However, Los Rojiblancos remain firm in their stance and are unwilling to allow their best player to join a direct rival. Now, while citing and translating the print version of AS, Sport Witness report that Álvarez had been confident of moving to Camp Nou this summer.

But he has now started to realise that Diego Simeone’s side haven’t been bluffing. Therefore, his only way out of the Spanish capital is to agree to move elsewhere, with Arsenal waiting in the wings to sign him.

So, the report state that Alvarez has started to open the door to a move to Arsenal. The Gunners have already agreed on a deal in principle with Atlético Madrid for a £128m fee, with Viktor Gyokeres going the other way. Now, the only remaining factor in sealing the deal is the South American’s approval.

Arsenal decided to purchase Gyokeres from Sporting CP last summer to address the No.9 problem. He moved to the Emirates Stadium off the back of two impressive campaigns at José Alvalade Stadium.

The Swedish international was Arsenal’s highest scorer last term and helped them win the Premier League title. However, he displayed inconsistent performances at times.

Alvarez to Arsenal

As a result, following Kai Havertz’s return from injury, he has been starting regularly in the No.9 position. Moreover, Gabriel Jesus is an option Arsenal currently has, but he has found himself on the periphery this season and has entered the final year of his current contract.

Alvarez is a versatile forward as he is comfortable in the CF and second striker roles. Moreover, he can provide cover on the flanks if needed. He has showcased his goal-scoring prowess for club and country in recent years.

The striker is currently at the prime stage of his career and is familiar with the Premier League’s physicality, having previously played for Manchester City.

So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they eventually manage to secure his services this summer.
