Arsenal plan to step up efforts to sign Julian Alvarez

Arsenal are reportedly considering accelerating their efforts to sign Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez, as per Football Insider.

After winning the Premier League title last term, the Gunners have enjoyed a bright start to this season. Having lifted the Community Shield by thrashing Manchester City 3-0 earlier this month, they have won the opening Premier League encounter against newly promoted side Coventry City.

Now, they are set to face struggling Aston Villa away from home on Monday. Unai Emery endured a dire 4-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion in the opening Premier League fixture last weekend.

Amid this situation, the North London club have continued to explore options to bolster the squad, with the transfer window set to slam shut in less than a week.

Now, Football Insider report that despite already purchasing Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge, Mikel Arteta is determined to sign a new forward late in this window and considers Alvarez a huge upgrade on the current crop.

So, Arsenal are planning to accelerate their efforts to finalise the operation. Although the 26-year-old is keen on leaving Atlético Madrid this summer, he is prioritising joining Barcelona.

Therefore, the Gunners will have to put their best efforts into persuading him to join and are hopeful of securing his services by defeating Barcelona in this race.

Alvarez to Arsenal

Having moved to Estadio Metropolitano from Manchester City in 2024, Alvarez still has a contract until 2030. So, Los Rojiblancos aren’t in a strong position to demand a big fee if they are forced to cash-in and want around £128m.

Alvarez is a centre-forward by trait but can provide cover as a second striker and is also comfortable on the flank. He has showcased his productivity in La Liga over the last two seasons and previously showed glimpses of his qualities in the Premier League for Man City. The 26-year-old has even enjoyed great success on the international stage with Argentina.

He is a top-class player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. So, the South American would be a great coup for Arsenal should they eventually manage to secure his services over the coming days.
