Arsenal ‘best placed’ to sign Christian Kofane afyer making ‘contact’
Arsenal have emerged as the ‘best placed’ team to sign Bayer Leverkusen centre-forward Christian Kofane this summer, according to BILD, as relayed by TEAMtalk.
Kofane got his first taste of European football after completing a move from Cameroonian outfit AS Nylon to Albacete Balompié in 2024.
The forward enjoyed a superb second half of the 2024/25 season, scoring eight goals in 20 appearances after the winter break. Those performances attracted strong interest from several clubs before Leverkusen secured his signature last summer.
Since settling in at the BayArena, he has blossomed into one of the most electrifying young forwards in the Bundesliga, contributing seven goals and nine assists across all competitions during the recently concluded season.
Supporters of Arsenal will already have seen plenty of his quality during the two-legged UEFA Champions League round-of-16 meeting with the Gunners. He caused constant problems for William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães, winning more fouls than any other player and creating three chances in the first leg.
Even with Arsenal closely man-marking him in the return fixture, the 6ft 2in striker still completed 88.9% of his passes, highlighting his composure and technical quality when operating under sustained pressure.
Now, citing German outlet BILD, TEAMtalk reports that Arsenal’s sporting director, Andrea Berta, has been in ‘close contact’ with Kofane’s agent since he impressed against the Gunners in the 3-1 aggregate win over Leverkusen.
In April, TEAMtalk reported that the 6ft 2in forward’s agent, Eric Depolo, confirmed Arsenal’s interest, stating that the Premier League champions have a ‘serious interest’ in the youngster, valued at £86m.
Gabriel Jesus’ replacement?
However, interest from other clubs has grown over the past three months, with the report adding that Newcastle United ‘want’ to sign Kofane, but their Champions League exclusion now casts doubt on the deal.
As such, TEAMtalk, relaying a BILD report, reveals that Arsenal have now emerged as the ‘best placed’ team to sign the Cameroonian international this summer.
The future of Gabriel Jesus at the Emirates Stadium remains uncertain, and there are suggestions he could depart the north London club this summer.
Should he depart, Kofane would represent a promising replacement. While concerns remain about his return of just 15 career goals in European football, it is important to remember that he is only 19 and has the potential to develop into a world-class forward under the guidance of Mikel Arteta.
