Arsenal are plotting an audacious swoop to sign Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United this summer, according to Standard Sport.

Since completing his move from Ligue 1 club Lyon to Newcastle in 2022, Guimarães has developed into one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders over the past four and a half years.

The Brazilian, described as ‘world class’ by Eddie Howe, has amassed 195 appearances for the Magpies, contributing 63 goals and assists, including 17 in the recently concluded campaign, while playing a pivotal role in the club’s rise in recent seasons.

Guimarães has also become a key figure for Brazil and has featured regularly under Carlo Ancelotti at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

With extensive experience at both club and international levels, exceptional technical ability and proven leadership qualities, Guimarães would fit into any title-chasing club, and it’s no surprise Standard Sport reports that Newcastle are concerned the 28-year-old could be considering a potential departure.

This is because Arsenal are plotting an audacious swoop to sign the Brazilian international this summer as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his midfield ranks, according to the report.

Standard Sport adds that the Premier League champions held talks with the midfielder’s entourage in recent days to understand the possibility of his transfer to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Guimarães swayed by Arsenal interest

The Gunners also made an informal £55m offer after receiving what is believed to be a green light from the player’s camp, but Newcastle quickly rebuffed it.

Following Arsenal’s proposed offer, Standard Sport, citing The Chronicle, reports that Guimarães may have been swayed by their interest, and Newcastle are also concerned about a potential Alexander Isak scenario in which the player refuses to play for the club.

However, the report reveals there’s no indication the Brazilian will force a move, although Mikel Arteta’s side are optimistic they could sign him for £65m.

Despite missing a significant portion of the campaign through injury, Guimarães still finished among the Premier League’s top five players for defensive line-breaking passes (46) and through balls (21).

He also topped Newcastle’s squad for passes completed under high-intensity pressure, recording 998, further highlighting his composure on the ball and willingness to take responsibility in demanding situations.

His mentality, leadership qualities, and ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck are invaluable assets that Mikel Arteta would admire as he looks to sustain his team’s dominance in domestic and European competition next season.
