Mikel Arteta provides injury update on Eberechi Eze
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Eberechi Eze is set to face up to seven days on the sidelines, with the attacking midfielder also withdrawing from England national team duty as a result.
The 27-year-old was absent from the EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester City on Sunday after sustaining the issue during the UEFA Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen last week.
It proved a setback for the former Crystal Palace man, who had produced a superb goal against the Bundesliga side, only to miss out as his teammates fell short at Wembley Stadium.
Arteta confirmed after the match that Eze would not be fit to join up with the England national football team during the international break.
The Spaniard stated, ‘We will do another scan on him in six or seven days, and we will wait to see the results. It’s a calf injury.’
It comes as a setback for the 27-year-old, who is competing with several attacking options for a place in the FIFA World Cup squad.
Players such as Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon, Morgan Rogers, Marcus Rashford, Jarrod Bowen and Noni Madueke are all in contention for spots on the plane.
Blow
Meanwhile, Jurriën Timber has also pulled out of the Netherlands national football team squad for the upcoming friendlies against the Norway national football team and the Ecuador national football team.
He was unavailable for the EFL Cup final after sustaining an injury during the 2–0 Premier League win over Everton, where he was withdrawn before half-time.
Centre-back William Saliba has likewise withdrawn from the France national football team squad for friendlies against Brazil and Colombia in the United States due to a left ankle injury.
Arsenal’s quest for an unprecedented quadruple was dealt a major disappointment after losing the Carabao Cup final to now nine-time winners Manchester City on Sunday.
Mikel Arteta had maintained an unbeaten record at Wembley Stadium with Arsenal, both as a player (W3, D1) and as a manager (W2, D2) – going on to win all three drawn matches on penalties before Sunday’s 2-0 loss to City. While they will still back themselves to secure silverware in 2025–26, the outcome serves as a psychological setback against their Premier League title rivals.
