Arsenal plotting ambitious swoop to sign Barcelona star Pau Cubarsi
Arsenal are plotting an audacious swoop to sign Barcelona centre-back Pau Cubarsí next summer, according to Fichajes.
The 19-year-old is another success story of Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy, having come through the ranks at the Catalan club since joining from Girona in 2018.
After impressing at the academy, he became the club’s seventh youngest-ever debutant after being handed his debut by Xavi Hernández in the 3-1 Copa del Rey win against Unionistas de Salamanca on January 18, 2024.
Since then, the youngster has remained a mainstay in the first team and has gone on to make 119 appearances for the Blaugrana while also being a regular for the Spanish national team in recent games.
He played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s clean sweep of titles in the domestic league, where they won the LaLiga, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup, and has remained an ever-present in their defence this season, where he has featured in 39 games across all competitions.
While he still has three years left on his contract, interest in his signature remains firm, and it appears several clubs, including Arsenal, could test the waters next summer.
This is according to Fichajes, which claims that Arsenal are plotting an audacious swoop to sign Cubarsi when the transfer window opens in the summer.
Audacious swoop
The report adds that Gunners boss Mikel Arteta believes the 6ft 1in centre-back would be a statement signing to reinforce his already resolute defence, citing his efficiency on the ball as a key asset.
With a contract at the Camp Nou that runs until 2029, Arsenal are exploring possible financial strategies to present to the Spanish international’s entourage, which include selling players like Riccardo Calafiori and Ben White to raise funds for the transfer, according to the report.
Although Barcelona have placed an untouchable tag on the 19-year-old, who is also of keen interest to Manchester City, the 28-time La Liga champions are demanding a sky-high £433m fee to sanction his departure, according to Fichajes, which is astronomically higher than his current £69m Transfermarkt valuation.
While Cubarsi would be a solid addition to Arteta’s backline, the economic value of the deal makes the deal improbable. The Gunners are already well stocked at centre-back, and the youngster is unlikely to bench either William Saliba or Gabriel Magalhães.
Hence, Arsenal should rather invest the funds in other positions like right back and left wing, especially with White, Leandro Trossard, and Gabriel Martinelli facing uncertain futures at the Emirates.
