Pundit slams Arsenal’s decision to sign Viktor Gyokeres
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has slammed Arsenal for signing Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP last summer.
As Gabriel Jesus has had numerous injury problems since joining from Manchester City a few years ago, and with Kai Havertz also struggling with fitness issues last term, the Gunners decided to reinforce their frontline by signing the Swede.
The 27-year-old was one of the most in-form forwards in Europe over the last two seasons. So, it was no surprise that the North London club chose to spend big to sign him.
However, he has endured a difficult start in the Premier League this season, netting only four times in 14 appearances thus far.
Now, speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast (via Metro), Scholes has slammed Arsenal’s decision to sign the former Sporting star, and he believes the forward would never be able to reach the elite level.
The pundit further claimed that Arsenal opted to purchase him as he was the only striker available at that time. However, Gyokeres works very hard without possession; therefore, his teammates like playing with him.
Scholes said:
“Do you know what I think about Gyokeres? I don’t think he’s ever going to be an unbelievable goalscorer but I think the rest of the team will like playing with him. He’s a focal point and works his b****** off.”

Gyokeres skipped pre-season at Sporting to force a move to Arsenal; as a result, he has been playing catch-up fitness-wise since the start of this season.
Similarly, his compatriot, Alexander Isak, also did the same at Newcastle United before joining Liverpool for a British record fee on deadline day. Now, he has also been struggling this season.
Although Gyokeres’ form hasn’t impacted Arsenal’s results, it is definitely a worry. Mikel Arteta’s side have been mounting a title charge, sitting at the top of the Premier League table with 36 points from 16 matches.
Therefore, the North Londoners will be hoping that Gyökeres can return to his best as soon as possible and help them finally win the Premier League title at the end of the season.
