Report: Wenger ‘Plotting’ £16m January Bid For Man Utd Target

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is understood to be plotting a £16m January bid for Italian international winger Alessio Cerci in order to beat Manchester United to his signature, according to reports.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed an excellent season in Serie A, scoring 8 goals in 12 games, and is pushing for a place in the Italian squad for next summers World Cup.

It seems his form has caught the eye of Wenger with the Daily Star one of several newspapers who are reporting that the boss is ready to meet Torino’s £16m asking price when the transfer window re-opens in January.

However, we could yet face competition from Manchester United with David Moyes believed to have been monitoring the wingers progress this season. Moyes was ready to wait until the summer before making his interest official and Arsene had hoped to sneak in and sign Cerci from under his rivals nose, but our interest could push the champions in to action sooner than expected.

Torino are desperate to keep hold on to the player and are trying to tie him down to a new long-term contract, but Cerci is considering his options with Arsenal heading the queue for his services if he decides he wants a new challenge.

Width has been one issue for us this season as we don’t really have any out-and-out wingers in the squad so Cerci would be a useful addition, but I’m not sure he’ll risk his World Cup place by moving clubs mid-season.

So we might have to wait until the summer for this one and if he enjoys a productive World Cup, we might see his value go through the roof.
