Confirmed line-ups: Sunderland vs Arsenal – Key man returns for Gunners
Arsenal can tighten their grip at the top of the Premier League table with a win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light this evening.
We currently sit six points clear of second placed Manchester City after 10 games, and with the Cityzens playing champions Liverpool on Sunday, this is a perfect opportunity for us to extend our lead over our nearest title rivals.
The Gunners head into the game in excellent form and extended our winning run with a comfortable 3-0 win over Slavia Prague in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Mikel Arteta has made three changes from the side that started in midweek. David Raya keeps goal once again for Arsenal while Jurrien Timber, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes all keep their places in defence. We do see one change with Riccardo Calafiori recalled at left-back meaning Piero Hincapie makes way despite an impressive full debut in midweek.
Martin Zubimendi returns from suspension so Christian Norgaard drops to the bench. Declan Rice starts once again while Eberechi Eze is recalled after being named on the bench against Prague. Martin Odegaard remains on the treatment table.
Bukayo Saka will be the main threat for us in attack and he’ll be looking to build on his goal from midweek. Viktor Gyokeres is still out so Mikel Merino leads the line up front and he’ll be in confident mood after netting a brace in the Champions League last time out.
Leandro Trossard keeps his place on the left wing with Gabriel Martinelli still out. Due to a horrendous injury list, and despite our depth in attack, our three attacking options on the bench today are all teenage academy graduates – aged 15, 17 and 18.
These are the teams for the game:
Arsenal
Raya, Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori, Zubimendi, Rice, Eze, Saka, Trossard, Merino.
Subs: Arrizabalaga, White, Lewis-Skelly, Hincapie, Mosquera, Norgaard, Nwaneri, Dowman, Harriman-Annous.
Sunderland
Roefs; Hume, Mukiele, Ballard, Geertruida, Reinildo; Xhaka, Sadiki, Traore, Le Fee; Isidor.
Subs: Patterson, Masuaku, Neil, Rigg, O’Nien, Talbi, Brobbey, Mayenda, Adingra
