Arsenal initiate talks to hijack Chelsea’s deal to sign Hato
Arsenal have reportedly initiated talks with Ajax Amsterdam to hijack Chelsea’s deal to sign Jorrel Hato, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.
The 19-year-old came into the spotlight after displaying eye-catching displays in the 2023/24 campaign. Following that, the Gunners expressed their interest in him last summer but never made a concrete approach. Eventually, they decided to reinforce the left side of defence by purchasing Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna.
The youngster enjoyed a stellar campaign last term, scoring twice and notching up six assists in 31 Eredivisie appearances. Moreover, he helped his side keep 11 clean sheets.
Hato was even a key part of the Netherlands team for the U21 European Championship this summer and guided his country to reach the semi-finals before losing to eventual champions England.
Now, as per a recent report (via Fichajes), having been impressed by his performances, Chelsea have registered their interest in signing him and are ready to spend up to £52m to seal the deal.
They are the favourites in this race, but Arsenal have now initiated talks to hijack the Blues’ move as Arsenal believe he would be an ‘ideal’ fit for their system.
Hato to Arsenal
The Dutchman is a versatile left-footed defender. He can play in the centre-back position as well as the left-back role. He is technically sound, is very comfortable playing out from the back, and is efficient in defensive contributions.
The Gunners have splashed big money this summer and have already purchased Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, and Cristhian Mosquera. Moreover, Viktor Gyokeres is set to be their new striker. Arteta’s side have already purchased around £200m.
Following Mosquera’s arrival, Arsenal currently have enough resources in the defensive department. So, although Hato is a highly talented player and would be a shrewd acquisition with a view to the long-term future, the North London club don’t need to invest more to add further depth in this area.
Instead, they would be better off saving the money for a new top-class left-winger. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Emirates club eventually opt to secure Hato’s service by defeating the West London club in this race.
