Arsenal hand pro deal to Marcell Washington
Arsenal have officially confirmed that young left-back Marcell Washington has signed his first professional contract with the club.
The 17-year-old, who was previously at Chelsea, impressed during a trial spell with the Gunners last season.
He featured in eight games for the Under-21 side and made two appearances for the Under-18s.
Washington, who enjoys attacking from deep, is determined to make a name for himself in north London.
He joins a growing list of promising talents stepping up from the academy.
Interestingly, Washington is the step-son of former England and Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand.
Bertrand played in the 2012 UEFA Champions League final, a moment that became a big part of Chelsea’s history.
Inspired by first-team stars and family guidance
Despite Bertrand’s decorated career, Washington wants to go even further.
He believes he can match or even surpass the achievements of his step-father.
Speaking after signing his deal, Washington expressed how much Bertrand’s advice has helped his development as a player.
He shared how Bertrand often gives detailed feedback on his performances.
“I think it has been an honour to have him take me through clips and talk me through my games,” Washington said. “He is always focused on helping me improve. He wants me to become an even better version of him. We might joke about it, but I can tell he means it.”
Washington also mentioned three Arsenal first-team players he looks up to – Jurrien Timber, Ben White, and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
He believes their paths show what can be achieved with patience and hard work.
The young defender is eager to continue learning and to one day follow their example by breaking into the senior squad. His journey is only just beginning, but the foundation he has built so far is strong.
With a strong support system, early experience at the club, and guidance from a former international, Washington appears well set for the next step in his career.
