Arsenal could revive interest in signing Ollie Watkins
Arsenal could reportedly revive interest in signing Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, as per transfer journalist Graeme Bailey.
The Gunners hold a long-term interest in the Englishman as they attempted to buy him in the winter window to strengthen the centre-forward position and even launched a formal proposal.
However, the Villans rejected the offer as they had no intention of parting ways with him in mid-season. But they are reportedly at risk of breaching the PSR rule, so a few of their stars’ futures have been a subject of speculation.
Emiliano Martínez have been attracting a lot of attention in this window, while Jacob Ramsey has also been linked with a move away.
Now, on TBR Football, Bailey says that despite failing to sign Watkins last time around, Arsenal haven’t cooled their interest in him. Although they have been working on a deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko, the North London club could revive their interest in Watkins should they eventually fail to sign the primary targets, with Watkins open to moving to the Emirates Stadium.
It was reported last weekend that Arsenal found a breakthrough in negotiations with Sporting to sign Gyokeres, but recent Portuguese reports claim that the deal is in danger of falling through.
Watkins to Arsenal
On the other hand, Leipzig are demanding huge money for Sesko, and Arsenal aren’t prepared to match their valuation. If Arsenal eventually go for Watkins, they don’t want to spend anything more than £50m.
The Gunners’ current centre-forward department include Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus; however, the Brazilian has been struggling with persistent injury problems.
On the other hand, the German couldn’t manage to showcase last term that he can lead Arsenal to win the Premier League title before sustaining a lengthy hamstring problem.
So, Arsenal are prioritising signing a new striker this summer, and Watkins is a Premier League proven player. In 54 appearances in all competitions, the 29-year-old scored 17 goals and registered 14 assists last term.
Therefore, the Englishman could be a great coup for Arteta’s side should they eventually manage to secure his service this summer. It is going to be interesting to see who the North London club eventually manage to sign to strengthen the attacking department.
