Arsenal legend Martin Keown has said that Viktor Gyokeres will be an ideal centre-forward option for his former team to finally win the Premier League title.

The Gunners initially reinforced the striker position by purchasing Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City a few years ago, and he enjoyed a bright start at the Emirates Stadium. However, his persistent injury problems have forced the North London club to find a new striker.

Kai Havertz has established himself as the first-choice centre-forward option since joining from Chelsea a couple of years ago. However, Mikel Arteta didn’t use him as a striker in the first few matches, which suggests that he wasn’t signed to lead the line.

Arsenal were without Jesus and Havertz for the second half of last season due to injury problems. Therefore, the Emirates club have decided to prioritise purchasing a new striker this summer.

Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres were the two primary targets for the Gunners and the recent reports suggest that Arteta’s side are close to reaching an agreement with Sporting to sign the Swedish international. The former Coventry City star is said to be keen on moving to the Emirates Stadium.

Now, on talkSPORT, reacting to the news about Arsenal agreeing a deal to sign Gyokeres, Keown says that his former side have a pretty strong squad and they don’t need to reinforce several areas, except the striker position.

Gyokeres to Arsenal

Gyokeres is a ‘rock solid’ striker, efficient in holding up the play, quick and emphatic in finishing off his chances. Therefore, he will be an ideal option for Arsenal to finally win the Premier League title.

Keown said:

“There’s not a lot wrong with the squad but they needed to add in certain positions, we’ve been crying out for a centre-forward due to the injuries that they had.

“This guy (Gyokeres) you know is rock solid, you can play the ball into him, he holds it up well, he has pace, power and I think he’s quite emphatic in front of goal — just what Arsenal need. He just now needs to do his talking on the pitch.”

Arsenal are reportedly set to spend around £69m to sign Gyokeres, with £56m in guaranteed fees plus £13m in bonuses.

Ruben Amorim was keen on reuniting with his former colleague at Manchester United, but the player has made it clear that he is prioritising to play under Arteta.
