Arsenal ‘expected to proceed’ to sign Sesko or Gyokeres
Arsenal are reportedly ‘expected to proceed’ with a deal to sign RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko or Sporting CP superstar Viktor Gyokeres, as per transfer journalist Ben Jacobs.
The Gunners ended the 2024/25 Premier League campaign with a victory over Southampton on the final day, as a result, they finished in second position.
Now, the focus shifts to the summer window as to how many new acquisitions Mikel Arteta’s side eventually make before the deadline to bolster the squad and finally win big silverware.
The North London club are reportedly close to signing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad as a potential replacement for Jorginho, who is set to leave the club as a free agent.
Now, Jacobs says that Arsenal are looking to hire a new striker and are ‘expected to proceed’ with a deal to sign Sesko or Gyokeres. The Gunners hold a long-term interest in the Slovenian as they initially presented their project to him last summer and also held talks in January.
Sesko or Gyokeres to Arsenal
Arsenal’s interest in Gyokeres is new. But, the Swedish international also has other suitors like Chelsea and Manchester United. The player is keen on playing in the Champions League, so he is unlikely to move to Old Trafford this summer.
Sesko is ‘keen’ on joining Arsenal and has a performance-related release clause worth around £67m. On the other hand, Gyokeres is likely to be available for around £59m, but his wage and agent fee will make him a more expensive option than Sesko.
Arteta’s side were also interested in Alexander Isak, but they are unlikely to be able to hire him after Newcastle United qualify for Champions League football next season.
Chelsea and Liverpool are also interested in Sesko, so Arsenal will have to overcome stiff competition to lure the Slovenian to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
Gyokeres has been showcasing his goal-scoring prowess for Sporting over the last two seasons, while Sesko has enjoyed a promising campaign this term, despite Leipzig’s struggles.
It is going to be interesting to see who the North London club eventually sign during the off-season to reinforce the attacking department.
