Arsenal lose assistant sporting director Jason Ayto
Jason Ayto has left his role at Arsenal after briefly stepping in as interim sporting director, as reported by The Athletic.
The 39-year-old took over temporarily following Edu Gaspar’s departure in November 2024.
Ayto worked as Edu’s assistant before stepping in to lead the club through the January transfer window.
He had been with Arsenal for a decade, starting as a scout and video analyst.
He rose steadily through the ranks and was a key figure behind the scenes. His most recent role as assistant sporting director lasted around eighteen months.
Ayto was in contention for the full-time sporting director role. However, the Gunners decided to appoint Andrea Berta instead.
Despite not being chosen for the top job, Arsenal wanted him to remain at the club. They valued his experience and trusted his judgement.
Ayto played a crucial role in Martin Zubimendi’s deal
But Ayto’s profile had grown in recent months, and interest from other clubs made staying at Arsenal less likely. He has now left to pursue other opportunities.
He is well known across Europe and speaks fluent Portuguese. This helped in talks for Martin Zubimendi, who is close to joining Arsenal from Real Sociedad.
Ayto played a major part in pushing that deal forward before his departure.
Arsenal have not yet confirmed whether they will name a new assistant sporting director. For now, Andrea Berta will lead operations heading into the summer window.
He will be supported by director of football operations James King and head of recruitment James Ellis.
The Gunners are preparing for a busy summer as they aim to improve the squad.
They hope to finally win the Premier League next season after coming close in recent campaigns.
They also want to perform better in Europe following a disappointing end to their Champions League journey in 2024-25.
The club’s plans for incoming signings are expected to move quickly once the window opens.
Ayto’s exit marks the end of a long spell of service at Arsenal. His work helped shape the club’s recruitment strategy in recent years.
All eyes are now on Berta and his team as the club enter another crucial summer.
