Arteta Confident Arsenal Can Overcome PSG’s 1-0 Lead
Mikel Arteta said ‘small margins’ cost his Arsenal last night but is confident they can still overturn the 1-0 deficit suffered against Paris Saint-Germain.
The Gunners were undone by a brilliant goal from Ousmane Dembélé in the fourth minute. Arsenal took their time to recover and get back into the game but eventually created a golden opportunity when Gabriel Martinelli was put through. However, the Brazilian was denied by Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The Italian international also made a stunning save to keep Leandro Trossard’s low effort out while David Raya also made a smart stop to keep it at 1-0. Arsenal couldn’t find the equaliser so PSG will take a slim 1-0 lead into next weeks second leg.
After the game, Arteta remained optimistic about the chances of a comeback in the second leg at the Parc des Princes. He insisted that being just one goal down at half-time gave Arsenal a real shot.
“We are at half-time, and my message is exactly the same as it was after we beat Real Madrid 3-0 in the first leg of the quarter-final. We have to go to Paris and win the game, and we are more than capable of doing it.”
Arteta stressed that to win the Champions League, his team would need to do something special. He believes Arsenal are still in the tie and have a good chance to reach the final.
“If you want to win the Champions League final, you have to do something special, and we are going to have to do something special in Paris to be there. We still have a lot of chances to be in that final.”
The manager also revealed that Arsenal would make necessary adjustments depending on the situation of the game.
“We will surely make some adjustments, and depending on the context of the game, we will make more adjustments.”
Arteta continued by expressing confidence in his team’s energy and drive, promising a strong, positive approach for the second leg.
“And from there, we will go with a lot of enthusiasm, with a lot of desire and with the feeling that we can do it.”
The Arsenal boss acknowledged the quality of both teams but emphasised that the margins were small. He also praised Donnarumma for his excellent saves, which he believes were crucial to PSG’s victory.
Arteta Confident of a Comeback
“I saw two very good teams, but the margins are so small,” Arteta added. “They had efficiency in front of the goal. The goalkeeper as well made a difference to the result.”
“We had two one-on-ones with Donnarumma and if they go in, it is a different story,” Arteta said. “But he made the saves, and that’s the difference in the Champions League. The margins are so small, and it didn’t go our way.“
Arsenal will be hoping to find a way to turn the tie around in the second leg and reach the Champions League final.
